I Judged This Book By Its Cover

Darkly by Marisha Pessl

December 30, 2024 by thegirlwhogotoverit 1 Comment

We were shopping for children’s books for The Smallest Niece when Darkly caught my eye across the bookstore.  A riot of magenta (images aren’t doing it justice), it begged to come home for *someone* this Christmas.  A cursory glance at the tag line – “You don’t own the game, it owns you” – revealed it as a perfect top up gift for The Best Nephew in Australia. The Best Nephew In Australia loved The Inheritance Games – hat tip to my sister for raising a […]

The Fall of the House of Usher: A Graphic Novel by Edgar Allen Poe and Raul Garcia

December 27, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My 624 and a full 12 Cannonball review is actually one that is a bit lackluster. Now, I enjoy a good Edgar Allen Poe as much as the next English Major Casual Fan, but The Fall of the House of Usher: A Graphic Novel (adapted and illustrated by Raul Garcia) is not one of my favorites. However, as it is adapted into the graphic novel format, I felt it would be a better way to understand the story (The Lottery by Shirly Jackson has been […]

Orphans and them

We Called Them Giants by Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans and Clayton Cowles

December 26, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have had We Called Them Giants by Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans and Clayton Cowles as an online reader copy for a few months. I have had opportunities to read it, but for the most part I figured it would expire before I had a chance to. Thankfully I was able to find it and read it at lunch today. It was an interesting experience. This graphic novel is an on book. We know the dystopian aspects (a girl wakes up one morning to find […]

Surviving middle school is hard

Just Beyond #1 The Scare School by R.L. Stine, Nichole Matthews and Kelly Matthews

December 26, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

R.L. Stine, Nichole Matthews and Kelly Matthews adapted Just Beyond #1 The Scare School into a graphic novel format. Or I am assuming it was a novel first, then a graphic novel. However, regardless of which came first (or didn’t come out) this is an old school RL Stine story. The theme is classic: We start with a couple of kids in “unusual clothing” (cue the “not from our world”) and how they are being chased by a robotic monster. We then see who lives […]

Baby’s First Coup

Poison in Their Hearts by Laura Sebastian

December 25, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Raised to be weapons in their mother’s arsenals, princesses Beatrice and Daphne have united forces and turned against her. But to defeat her once and for all, they must not only convince their allies but the people themselves that they have what it takes. This is the action-packed conclusion to the Castle in Their Bones series, which follows a trio of princess sisters who, after parting to wed into – and destabilize – three neighboring countries, reevaluate those goals and decide to work against their […]

When you’re the first person in 150 years to be charged with horse theft, but you did it, so then what?

Grand Theft Horse by G. Neri

December 23, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Grand Theft Horse started out slow, but once we get into the legal aspects and the world of horse racing things pick up. Told in first person narrative, G. Neri tells the story of his cousin Gail, who on Christmas Eve decided to steal a horse. Of course, it is not as simple as that. Part owner of a racing horse, she (as his trainer) realizes he is unable to run the next race due to an injury. But the majority-owners do not see an […]
