Songs of Grandfather

Cassi and the House of Memories: A Graphic Novel by Dean Stuart

October 21, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes I see a book and say to myself that it looks good, but for some reason say no thank you to actually reading. Then things happen and it keeps coming back to my attention. And finally one day I will say FINE I will read you. Sometimes I regret doing that, sometimes I do not. I am not sure how I feel about Cassi and the House of Memories: A Graphic Novel by Dean Stuart. This book is an emotional fantastical journey of a […]

The women poets of the Harlem Renaissance

Legacy: Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance by Nikki Grimes

October 21, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When a book has a good backstory, be it how it was made, inspired or the author themselves I usually enjoy that as much as the book. And when my personal journey is the backstory, well of course I love that! The backstory to how I found Legacy: Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance by Nikki Grimes (to me) was funny. The library trip with my nephew had me in the wrong section (non fiction) when we first wandered into the children’s room. Well, I […]

Purple for the Spooky Science

The Glass Scientists vol. 1 by S. H. Cotucino

October 11, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 20: Purple When the public library has a summer reading program that adults can do, and also get prizes, it’s a good time. The past few years, the top reading level prize (defined by minutes read) is you get to take home a new book from a seemingly random selection the library ahs gotten. This year I went with The Glass Scientists volume 1. It was on the YA list, but I tend to keep an eye out for things I can use in […]

Greed, pretty princesses and monsters

Darkly She Goes by Hubert

October 9, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After reading Darkly She Goes by Hubert and illustrated by Vincent Mallié (translated by L Benson and color by Bruno Tatti) I realized that I will be haunted by Hubert’s writing. After reading Beauty by them, I figured nothing would shock me about their style. But Darkly She Goes is a terribly odd, weird, insane ride. There were unlikable characters, situations and the ending was unsatisfying. The images were dark, violent and awkward. Yet, I was mesmerized from page one and could not stop reading. […]
