Woodworking by Emily St. James

Woodworking by Emily St. James

April 2, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

Wow what a great book. I loved it from the beginning to the end. No notes. “Woodworking” follows Abigail, a 17 year old teen trans girl living in Mitchell, South Dakota. She keeps focusing on when she becomes 18 she can get away from her family and do what she considers “woodworking” meaning she will be able to do what she needs to for her to be fully Abigail and be like every other girl out there. Her plans are thrown into the trash though […]

Take me to Sugar Town

Sugar Town by Hazel Newlevant

April 1, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I can’t give Sugar Town by Hazel Newlevant a pure four, but my feelings and likes make things  closer to a four than a three. The nice thing about the book is that each reader can find what they are looking for within the stories. Sometimes I like our characters, sometimes not. Would I be friends with them? Probably not, but I think we could be good acquaintances. I like the look into Hazel’s world. The mixture of events shows a good look into human […]

My Degeneration: A Journey Through Parkinson’s by Peter Dunlap-Shoh

April 1, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This GN is this year’s  Down to the Bone: A Leukemia Story by Catherine Pioli The Language of PD  The Spandex Angel One Order of No Vomit Coming Up I Hate Running I could call this review any of the above and a hundred other things. Such as, “I tried not to cry as I was reading as I was at work and it reminded me of my friends who passed from complications of the disease (and one of whom also had complications from Alzheimer’s).” […]

You’re never too old to come of age.

Motherlover by Lindsay Ishihiro

March 31, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Motherlover by Lindsay Ishihiro was sent to me from an Iron Circus Comics email. I was not specially targeted but that was fine. After all, I find some of my favorite reads because of things like this. Now, I was a little turned off first of all by the fact it was being promoted as a romance and a non-spicy romance graphic novel, slow burn one at that. But I have been trying to step outside my reading comfort zone, so why not give it […]

I read Snow’s story to get to Haymitch

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

March 28, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is one of those books I have had almost since it was released and yet just kept skipping over. Because of course I want more of The Hunger Games but also, fuck Snow. However, with the new novel focused on Haymitch, that I definitely want to read, I ended up finally deciding to read it – even if I considered skipping it all together.

A Cozy Low-Stakes Graphic Novel

The Baker and the Bard by Fern Haught

March 27, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I picked this up for the Trans Rights Readathon. I didn’t realize it was happening until pretty late, so I wanted a book I could read quickly, and this short graphic novel fit the bill. It’s a fast-paced, cozy YA fantasy, though I would say it reads as young YA and could potentially be suitable for late middle grade. But adults can enjoy it, too, as I did. The book is set in a fantasy land that seems to include both human and non-human species […]
