Know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em.

This is a book about luck and love and sex and  history and hate and imperialism, and, most of all, about playing the hand you’ve been dealt. Pachinko is a great big family saga. The main character, if there is one, is introduced fairly early on: Sunja, a teenager living with her mother who runs a boarding house in a fishing village in (what is now South) Korea, during Japanese occupation. A suave older man seduces her, one thing leads to the next, (this actually […]

Apple, Tree, and All That

August 1, 2017 by Jenny S 2 Comments

In my reading history, there is a longstanding tradition of Stephen King books and summer.  When I was in high school and started my first summer job lifeguarding at the local park district pool, I spent a lot of time on my breaks talking with the cashier, Amy.  She was a year older than me and I remember she always had a Stephen King novel with her.  On her recommendation, I read Carrie, The Stand, and my favorite, The Dead Zone that summer and those […]

Sweet Dom Wins Me Over

July 26, 2017 by Lane Leave a Comment

This book surprised me. I would not have picked it up on its own (BDSM, contemporary, May/Decemberish)  but it was part of a loose series (Spires) that I had really enjoyed up to this point, and I have started trusting Alexis Hall in general, so I read it and really kind of loved it. Laurie is a sub in the bedroom but out of it he is a successful doctor in his late thirties (I think he is thirty nine but I might not be […]

“Holding the leaf inches away from the fire, I repeated the words that my family had been taught since basically the beginning of time: ‘My name is my self, and I give them both freely…'”

The Quick family is responsible for keeping their town safe. They receive offerings, take something from the person, and use that to maintain the cliff on the outside of town. If they were to stop? Rocks fall, everyone dies. The one rule of the Quicks is that they don’t steal from family. Guess how well that works? In the meantime, Aspen has been spending the summer with his grandma and aunt. Being the upstanding guy he is, Aspen gets his best friend’s girlfriend to break […]

“My sport- the special skill I’ve developed my whole life- is surviving, and that doesn’t leave much room for following Cinderella dreams…”

July 16, 2017 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

This one makes me a little nervous because I know there was some controversy before the book came out. It seems as though it was over a bad summary that has since been changed. Some people also took offense at how a lesbian character ends up having feelings for a boy, which is understandable. However, the book also details the journey of a character realizing that she might not be just one thing, that things can change. She doesn’t really use the term bisexual, but […]

The Walled City

July 16, 2017 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

I was under the impression that The Walled City involved some sort of dystopian/monster/Maze Runner thing all the way up until I read it. It’s actually an action-filled story set in a realistic world. The Walled City, based on an actual city, is a place where criminals live. Our story focuses on three characters: Dai, Jin, and Mei Yee. Dai is secretly working to take down the owner of the city’s biggest drug business. He recruits Jin as his runner, whose job is to run […]
