The finest Hallmark movie in book format. A big warm bowl of predictability.

November 26, 2017 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I am two for two with the local library book club this year in finding the book selection to be subpar.  In fact, I am on the fence whether I liked this one, or Everything I Never Told You the least.  This one was just predictable and eyeroll worthy, whereas the other made me downright angry, so I think The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend will land the distinction of being not quite as bad as the book I liked least this year. Sara Lundqvist is […]

“My whole life I thought I was the star of an overly earnest romance movie, and it turns out I was in a goddamned buddy comedy all along” Aza is dealing with anxiety. Her thoughts spiral out of control, invade her mind, and make life hard. Still, she goes to school, she keeps up with her friends and tries her best to do what her therapist tells her. You Can’t Expect to be Treated Rationally as a Woman

3.5 Stars for A Study in Scarlet, 4.5 stars for a Conspiracy in Belgravia Is there anything Sherry Thomas can’t do? After I listened to the audio books A Study in Scarlet and A Conspiracy in Belgravia, I discovered that Sherry Thomas likes to write what she enjoys reading, so she has written romance, fantasy, mystery, and a wuxia-inspired duology. I will seek them all out. These mystery novels were delightful. A Study in Scarlet is a great start, but A Conspiracy in Belgravia was so […]

Toxic Masculinity Meets Estrogen Poisoning

October 21, 2017 by katie71483 4 Comments

Lord have mercy, do we have a treat for y’all.  Be forewarned, this review is going to be rife with gifs, memes, and spoilers because… you’ll see. It’s a doozy. The year is 2437. There are about 2 billion people left on earth after World War III (aka “The Toxic War”) which broke out in 2057 and lasted until 2060. At that point, women outnumbered men 26 to 1 and it was the general consensus that “male pride and aggression” caused the near destruction of […]

Are we allowed to curse in review titles?

October 20, 2017 by Blingle Bells 6 Comments

I’m not sure about title-cursing rules, otherwise the title would be “Fuck This Book.” I don’t even know where to start, this stupid childish book brought out such a visceral rage in me. Reviews on Amazon and Goodreads suggest that some people didn’t abhor it. Some people loved it. This makes me think about statistics and probability – does the number of five star ratings mean that there are people in my life who do or would like this dumpster fire of a “book”? (The quotation […]

So, Apparently, This Lady is Relatively Attractive…

The Banished of Muirwood, The Ciphers of Muirwood, The Void of Muirwood (The Covenant of Muirwood Trilogy) By Jeff Wheeler This is a great little fantasy series. Having read the Acknowledgements, the author did something kind of fun- he took a broad outline of actual historical events and turned them into a fantasy novel. It works, I loved the plot, it felt real and plausible and most of the people were very three dimensional. Finding out it was based on reality kind of helped show […]
