Crying Out My Safe Word

King Blood by Jim Thompson

January 14, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

I am an unrequited fan of Jim Thompson’s novels. If he’s not my favorite writer of all time, he’s one of them. I usually read books for good, well-plotted stories with richly developed characters. Rarely do I read them for metaphysics. Such is not the case with Thompson’s work. Famously dubbed the “dimestore Dostoevsky”, Thompson’s unrelenting nihilism and views of the corruption of human nature weirdly fit my own despite my cheery demeanor. I believe we’re all mere steps away from chaos and those who […]

Cover of Lies Sleeping

Did anyone think to check the building for personifications of Roman Gods

Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch

January 14, 2019 by kittenkong42 2 Comments

Modern day London: home to a vibrant mix of cultures, faiths, and hipster coffee shops. And, in Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series, also home to gods and goddesses, the fae, ghosts of past London, and the terrifying spirit of Mr Punch from the Punch & Judy puppet show. Really it’s not surprising that the Met Police need their own magic division to cope with a city where any building could embody the spirit of a 2500 year old anglo-roman who got worshipped as a […]

Game of Thrones? Child’s play. Meet B. decapitans.

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins

January 13, 2019 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

Confusing, meandering, and utterly adorable. An examination of a gene’s drive to replicate and survive versus that said drive in an organism. Darwinism commingled with genetic theory, with the occasional side trip into game theory (Prisoner’s Dilemma!). I ask you, how can you resist? …we have the beguiling image of independent DNA replicators, skipping like chamois, free and untrammeled down the generations, temporarily brought together in throwaway survival machines, immortal coils shuffling off an endless succession of mortal ones as they forge ahead towards their separate […]

Getting to Know You, Getting to Know All About You …

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

January 11, 2019 by Danar the Barbarian 4 Comments

If you haven’t read American Psycho yet, you’re in for a real treat.  Either that or you will hate me for recommending this book and possibly sue me for damages and mental distress. In any case, Patrick Bateman, the titular American Psycho, has become part of pop culture.  Whether you’ve read the book, seen the (excellently adapted) movie, or just know him from this gif: You know that he’s a narcissistic Wall Street trust fund baby with a serious case of bloodlust and unmitigated misogyny. But […]

This is my year of not apologising for reading romance

Highlander by Julia Sykes

January 10, 2019 by thegirlwhogotoverit 3 Comments

I have spent a lot of time being embarrassed about certain sections of my reading habits.  I have referred to romance novels as Treadmill Trash over and over again (yes, I like to read my kindle to distract myself while I run on the treadmill), but I’ve decided that this is my year to Woman Up and accept that I am just that into them. [For the record, I deleted a sentence up there describing the breadth of my reading habits.  You like reading about […]
