Rich People Problems – Neat wrap-up for the trilogy

Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

February 9, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

The end of the “Crazy Rich Asians” trilogy is a mostly satisfying romp, with more high drama and preposterous situations that we have come to love from Kwan. The characters are consistent from the previous books: Rachel is sweet and wooden, Eleanor is domineering and awful, Nick is charming and charming, Astrid is otherworldly, Eddie is a screeching gasbag. And so forth. Su Yi is on her deathbed and in this final act, we find out what happens to her estate, and all of the […]

Into the Woods to Grandmother’s House and Home Before Dark

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

February 6, 2019 by lumenatrix 4 Comments

I was the kid that had the Complete Collection of Grimm’s Tales and The Illustrated Hans Christian Andersen and got really annoyed when Disney didn’t get them right. Cinderella’s sisters are supposed to mutilate their feet to try to get the shoe to fit! The witch needs to kill Snow White THREE TIMES! The Little Mermaid is supposed to die, dammit! That’s the only way the story really makes sense! Basically, I was that kid who wanted her stories dark and gorey. I have a feeling Tales […]

“… these are the differences that determine the fate of the universe.”

Last Day on Mars by Kevin Emerson

January 30, 2019 by cosbrarian 2 Comments

In the year 2213, Earth no longer exists. Mysteriously, the sun began expanding in size, approaching supernova phase far far earlier than it should.  Humanity was prepared, having developed the plans and ability to colonize Mars briefly, before regrouping on a distant star with Earth-like qualities. By now, most humans have begun the 150 year journey to this new star, and a select few remain behind on Mars to finish terraforming and collect data to ensure the trip to our new home goes smoothly.  Liam […]

Bad books make for a good read

Bad Book Club by Robin Ince

January 30, 2019 by TheShitWizard 4 Comments

Robin Ince’s Bad Book Club is a funny and interesting tour through some of the books you will never find in Waterstones, hidden as they are inside charity and secondhand shops. Robin Ince has made a habit of collecting these books – the more esoteric or eccentric, the better – and reading them so that we don’t have to. Taking us into a world of ‘celebrity’ autobiographies (with those on the lower end of the fame scale and yet high on ego providing the more […]

“Men of action, above all those whose actions are guided by love, live forever.” – Jose Marti

The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora by Pablo Cartaya

January 28, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Arturo Zamora and his family are tight — and I mean the whole family.  He and his extended family all live in the same apartment complex. The heart of the family is his Abuela, who still manages her restaurant “La Cocina” which she and her late husband opened when they emigrated here from Cuba. Her daughter is the master chef, but Abuela makes her daily rounds, greeting every customer — and her love and attentiveness is half the reason the restaurant is always packed (the […]

Trolls, Trolls, and More Trolls

In The Troll Wood by John Bauer

January 27, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

I have loved John Bauer since I lived in Sweden for six months when I was a kid. My parents give a collection of fairy tales illustrated by him. There is something about his trolls and his use of light and shadow. This picture presents Bauer’s artwork with short little narratives about trolls. There is what happens when a Friar tries to exile trolls from a forest. There is a princess who is captured by trolls but is able to save herself. There is […]
