Anotterchaos #2: Dollars to Duchesses

January 14, 2014 by anotterchaos 1 Comment

Supposedly the book that inspired Julian Fellowes to create the character of Cora, Countess of Grantham, this book explores the late 19th/early 20th century phenomenon of American women taking their fortunes to England to husband-hunt. An interesting, if not riveting, read.

Drama without Passion

January 13, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

This is a fairly well-written but slow-paced story that takes place in the tiny town of Witless Bay, Newfoundland, surrounding a handful of colorful characters who struggle to make sense of their lives with relatively little connection to the outside world. Touches of magical realism combine with a certain bleakness of spirit to make for a story which has fascinating aspects to it, but which ultimately left me somewhat cold. The Book Every Writer Should Read

January 12, 2014 by Another Kate Leave a Comment

The climax occurs when the trio flings Luke’s ashes into a tornado on Christmas morning. He improbably sells this…remarkable work, and then he sits back and waits for the money to […]

the almost moon.

January 11, 2014 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

Last year I didn’t finish four books which is an embarrassing number for me… I say that because I *struggled* to finish The Almost Moon- starting and finishing three books in the process… Another thing I try to avoid. I read Lucky when I was a sophomore in college and loved its gritty honesty. I read The Lovely Bones (along with the rest of the world) right before the movie adaptation came out. I was excited to see The Almost Moon at a library yearly […]

This is one of those books I wish I had multiple copies of, so I could loan it immediately to everyone I know. It was so much fun! I listened to the audio book, and finished it on my drive home from work. By the next morning
