Chinese/U.S. Relations Viewed Through the Lens of a Murder Mystery

February 13, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Flower Net is the first of a trilogy by this author, whose Snow Flower and the Secret Fan blew me away when I read it several years ago. This book travels back and forth between the U.S. and China in 1997, and is an incisive political commentary couched in a splendid if somewhat gruesome murder mystery. Liu Hulan is a beautiful young Chinese detective who has had to fight hard to achieve her respected status, but has to contend with the fact that is a […]

It’s really all about the cat

February 13, 2014 by Sophia Leave a Comment

It’s probably not surprising to anyone that I heard about To Say Nothing of the Dog [Or How We Found the Bishop’s Bird Stump At Last] (1998) by Connie Willis from another Cannoball review. Time travel and science fiction aren’t my go-to genres but the review was more than convincing enough for me to expand my normal boundaries. This was an impressive work: a mixture of romance, mystery, and science-fiction with the clever, lighthearted feeling of a P.G. Wodehouse novel. I enjoyed this book, but […]

Who killed Kurt Cobain?????

February 13, 2014 by Lady B. Leave a Comment

Since I am essentially close to being an old person (30th birthday next month!), I decided to revisit my youth with my first book in the Cannonball Read, Love & Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain written by Max Wallace and Ian Halperin. As you can probably tell from the title, this book is about a well-known theory that Courtney Love of the band Hole had some degree of involvement in the death of her husband, Kurt Cobain of the epic grunge band Nirvana. The […]

KayKay #CBR6 Review #07 The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

February 13, 2014 by UniverseInMe Leave a Comment

Someone recently asked me what this book was about.  I wanted to say it is about a journey, and there’s magic and a magic school…but that sounded too much like Harry Potter.  I decided I couldn’t properly remember, and I needed read it again and write a proper review.  I write these reviews because I have a terrible memory.  I mostly remember the feeling I had when I read a book (and this one left me with a great feeling).  Needless to say this book is a 5, if […]

It’s like the Double Dare obstacle course in book form!

What’s a good way to get your kids interested in life science?  This book about gross stuff that’s printed in purple and green is a good start.

Regulatoooooooors…mount up!

February 10, 2014 by Return of Santitas 1 Comment

Do you think Stephen King was listening to this when he wrote The Regulators? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1plPyJdXKIY Sorry, I mean when “Richard Bachman” was writing it? I had a cold last weekend and spent three days laid out on the couch, unable to stand up for very long. On the Friday I marathoned the end of Orange is the New Black. On the Saturday my brain was working a bit better, so I dove into our ebook library. We’ve got this massive collection of ebooks that was […]
