The Hunchback of Lausanne

February 23, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

Let’s see – toss together angels, call girls, a cathedral “guet”, Nephilim and creepy disconnected “shadows” and you get…”The Watchers – first of the Angelus Trilogy” by Jon Steele. A bit of a retelling of the “Hunchback of Notre Dame” going on here. There are three main characters – the first (and most likeable) is Marc Rochat – the “guet” of the Cathedral of Lausanne. “Guet” is an old military term for “watcher” and it is Marc’s job to “call the hours” when the […]

This Book is Brilliantly Bonkers

February 20, 2014 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

Pros: An amazing main character and two very excellent supporting characters. I want to be friends with these people. A completely insane story that makes me want to write clichés about rollercoasters. (Nonstop thrill ride! Hold on tight! Etc.!) Funny stuff. Gross stuff. Surprisingly thought-provoking stuff. A palpable sense of dread during the appropriate suspensey parts, and an urge to stomp around heroically during the ‘frak yeah!’ parts. An ending that manages to not tie up everything in a neat little bow, but still be […]

Jeeves gets to the bottom of it

February 20, 2014 by anotterchaos 2 Comments

A valiant show, old boy. Sebastian Faulk has set himself a difficult task: to write in the style of a man who wrote as no one else ever had.  Wodehouse’s style, his lightness and clever touch with a plot, and mostly, his two memorable characters, have set him apart from other writers of his generation & others.  (And if you’ve never read Wodehouse, shame on you.) Mr. Faulk makes a reasonable job of it. The plot, like any good J. & W. tale, is convoluted, […]

thewheelbarrow’s Review #1: Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants by Matthew Inman

February 17, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

Why Grizzly Bears Should Wear Underpants is the fourth book and second anthology from TheOatmeal.com creator, Matthew Inman. It’s not really really an anthology but the description is still apt. I have always enjoyed The Oatmeal and this book was on sale at my local Barnes and Noble so I bought it. My wife and I made this our bathroom reader and my normally long visits instantly became even longer. It was a good thing that I read this on the toilet because I very […]

You’re Incomparable Like a… Like a…

February 14, 2014 by Lisa Bee 1 Comment

If I had to summarize my feelings for this book in one sentence, it would read something like, “This is so silly, but I love it!” In all honesty, I don’t know why I had never heard of Bo Burnham until recently, and I must say that although he is a little ridiculous and random, I find his brand of comedy to be extremely amusing. Egghead: Or, You Can’t Survive on Ideas Alone is a short book of poems with accompanying drawings by Chance Bone; the […]
