Review 19 and 20: Bad writing but some good laughs

March 2, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Perhaps I confused these novels at the library’s with Patricia Cornwell’s books about that other female forensic specialist, but after dutifully slogging through these to the finish line, I have to say I should have stuck with Cornwell. Johansen’s books start off with a decent premise and then go rapidly downhill from there. I thought I was reading about the hunt for a psycho kidnapper out for vengeance over the execution of his child-rapist and murderer son, and instead I got a bunch of cheap […]

Ya gotta pay the rent

March 2, 2014 by anotterchaos Leave a Comment

When I watch the musical Rent, I get carried away by the emotion, the stories, and of course, the music.  I cry. But when you actually think about it, it’s really a bit whiny (Really?  You think you should be able to live there for free because you’re fabulous?). This is a bit how I feel about this book.  I get caught up in the stories, the emotion. I cried, I admit it.  But really, it is a bit angsty, a bit whiny, a lot […]

From a Bitter Kitten

February 27, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

As  I mentioned in a previous review I have a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising. I also have an (probably unhealthy) obsession with celebrities and pop culture. Most of my bookmarked sites are for celebrity gossip, movie & television news and fashion blogs. One of my favorite blogs is http://tomandlorenzo.com/ run by TLo (as they are called)- a gay couple who are New York adjacent (Philadelphia I believe)- which started out as “Project Rungay”. They began during the first season of Project Runway (when it was […]

Gay Men Don’t Get Fat

February 25, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I have a degree in Fashion Merchandising and work at a high end retail store. I spent most of my college years binge watching America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway- needless to say I was well aware of Simon Doonan prior to this book. I think if I hadn’t already been aware of Doonan’s history as the creative director for Barney’s I probably wouldn’t have picked his book up to begin with, but I think I would most definitely been disappointed by it. I wouldn’t […]

Monuments Men is the story  of the MFAA, a special part of the Army created during WW2 who were tasked with finding the art that the Nazi party had stolen.  These are not your 18-year-old GIs but rather (mostly) American and British men who worked in professions like art history, restoration and curating previous to the war. I live for shit like that; however Monuments Men failed to capture my attention. It’s been a while since I’ve read such a dense book. Monuments Men reads very much […]

Secret Societies, 24 hour bookstores, Oh My! Festina Lente!

February 23, 2014 by anevilweasel 1 Comment

I love this book – read it a couple times, listened to the Audible version – so yeah – I’m a fan. Ok here goes: combine one out of work web designer, a mysterious bookstore, a secret society, Google, Hadoop, encrypted messages and cute Data Visualization girl from Google and you have Mr Penumbra’s 24 bookstore. This book actually uses Hadoop as a plot point! So cool for us geeky data types.   It is a little “San Francisco techie hipster” so maybe it […]
