So continues my quest for the perfect vampire novel…

March 7, 2014 by genericwhitegirl Leave a Comment

Hmmm….everything about this book makes me want to like it. The premise, the satire, the author, and a lot of reviews I skimmed on Goodreads. But I just can’t bring myself to the level of enthusiasm of these other reviewers. Dark Moonlighting is the first of a four novel series. It’s about Nick, a 600 year old vampire doctor-lawyer-police officer (needing only 2 hours of sleep a night, Nick has plenty of time to work) . No, Nick isn’t sexy, he doesn’t glow in the […]

Remembering what had been forgotten…

March 7, 2014 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

The summer before 7th grade I read ‘salems Lot. I have always been a strong reader and this wasn’t my first adult book. However this was the first book that absolutely terrified me. I clearly remember sitting in our screened in sun porch, sweltering in the hot July Indiana summer, and shivering as all manner of hell tore the sleepy town of Jurasalem’s Lot to pieces. From that point I was a horror hound and hooked for life. Like all long time Constant Readers I […]

May the Circle be Unbroken . . . NOT

March 7, 2014 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

Dave Eggers has written a chilling thought piece.  While I don’t think it fully works as a novel, the ideas it raises have stayed with me for many days since I finished the book.  The main character, Mae Holland, is saved from the soul-crushing effects of her first post-college job (at the local utility company) by a job offer from the Circle, a Google-like company.  Mae’s college friend, Annie, has been working at the Circle since they graduated from college and has quickly moved up […]

Art as Ambassador

March 6, 2014 by Honey Bee Leave a Comment

“In life you’ll meet a lot of jerks. If they hurt you, tell yourself that it’s because they’re stupid. That will help keep you from reacting to their cruelty. Because there is nothing worse than bitterness and vengeance… Always keep your dignity and be true to yourself.” – Persepolis I mentioned in my last review that I’ve been reading books for this Cannonball, so far, that are out of date. I mean that they are books published within the last ten to twenty years, but […]

I do have a soft-spot for an Emma

March 6, 2014 by NTE Leave a Comment

Colleen O’Rourke is happy with her life – she’s good at playing matchmaker for the other people in her small town (7 babies, and married &/or happily engaged couples to her credit!), but since she got her heartbroken some years ago, she’s mostly stuck to short-term dating for herself. Which she’s perfectly happy with. Mostly. But now her best friend is getting married (a couple from a previous book in the series, I’m sure), her twin brother is being cagey about who he’s seeing, […]

The Bone Season

March 3, 2014 by Vylotte 2 Comments

As history tells it, Jack the Ripper was the demented heir to the throne who unleashed a plague of clairvoyance on the world through his evil actions and deeds, ripping a gateway through the veil. Now, more than 100 years later, London and parts of Europe are ruled with an iron fist by Scions who try to purge the world of these voyants, who are often never seen again. Of course, there is a bustling illegal underground of these people who can touch the […]
