I’m Sorry You Feel That Way

March 16, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Synopsis from Amazon.com Surrounded by dysfunctional men-from her fourteen-year-old son to her high-maintenance boss-Diana Joseph did what she had to do: survive. I’m Sorry You Feel That Way is an honest, hilarious, and instantly recognizable memoir of a truly modern woman. Funny, fearless, and warmhearted, it is a portrait of a woman in all her endless complexities and contradictions, and of the people she has come to love in spite of-or rather because of-theirs. Diana Joseph’s book of essays was an easy read, the writing […]

Ignore the Haters, This Book Rocks

Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Marriage Plot is set in 1982 and follows three co‑eds as they graduate from Brown and embark on their first year post‑college. Madeleine Hanna is the gal at the center of this love triangle, an English major in love with the great Victorian romance novels, rather than the hip semiotics novels that her peers love. On the other two points are Mitchell Grammaticus, who is into Christian mysticism, and Leonard Bankhead, a manic‑depressive scientist. Eugenides’s writing is beautiful, but not for the […]

“Do you have to find the evil in yourself in order to truly recognize it in the world?”

March 14, 2014 by kmullane Leave a Comment

After binge-watching the Netflix original series “Orange in the New Black” in only three days, I knew I had to read the book to compare the real accounts of Piper Kerman to the dramatized television series of Piper Chapman. I’ve always liked books better than their movie or television counterparts, and because I enjoyed the series, I expected to like the book more. I wasn’t disappointed. Without going into too many details because of the differences between the two versions, the basis of the story […]

Not Actually a Fear Street Book

March 9, 2014 by TyburnBlossom Leave a Comment

This is only a Fear Street book by the very thinnest of margins–three of the main characters are from Shadyside and one lives on Fear Street. Mentioning it briefly is as close as the entire story gets to the titular street. Since RL Stine also published Point Thrillers and other books, I’m not sure why this was a Fear Street book. Since all the Fear Street books before this one were published in 1989 and 1990, maybe it was a deadline thing. In any case, […]

Rough Stuff

March 9, 2014 by Travis_J_Smith 4 Comments

I was planning on continuing writing and upping these in 13 review chunks, and I probably should push myself to do that given I was 60+ reviews behind before today, but because writing that many reviews that fast takes a toll on you after a while, I’ll dial it back to 7 review chunks. As a result, that sole 4 star book  I asked you guys to try and guess won’t show up until the next chunk   #66: Thank You for Smoking by Christopher […]

It’s … Fine

March 8, 2014 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Hmmm. So, there are definitely parts of this book that I really, really enjoyed. Parts that either made me laugh out loud or that were funny without being chuck funny. But other parts … I’m unclear if my humor is just not the same, or if I wasn’t getting it, or if I’m not the target. I picked the audio version, which was read not just by Mr. Novak (of The Office fame), but Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, Katy Perry, Lena Dunham and others. That […]
