Alpha & Omega (Locke & Key Vol. 6)

March 23, 2014 by Vylotte Leave a Comment

The series has finally come to a close, and what started out as a creepy homage to Lovecraft and the unsettling horror of old came home a fully fleshed, chilling look at the patience of evil. After all the deep world building of the first trades, this final installment felt rushed, the chase scenes felt drawn out to fit into the cliche of ending a nice cerebral ride with a chase, but that is my only complaint. I felt the ending was satisfying, suspenseful and […]

Trains or Foster Homes?

March 20, 2014 by JCoppercorn Leave a Comment

The Orphan Train Movement was a supervised welfare program that transported orphaned and homeless children from crowded Eastern cities of the United States to foster homes located largely in rural areas of the Midwest. The orphan trains operated between 1853 and 1929, relocating about 250,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children.  Two charitable institutions, the Children’s Aid Society and later, the Catholic New York Foundling Hospital, endeavored to help these children. The two institutions developed a program that placed homeless, orphaned, and abandoned city children, who […]

Not Bad for the Hot Pockets Guy

March 20, 2014 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

First, I have to say that I’m a fan of Jim Gaffigan, ever since his days on the Chicago-set show, My Boys.  Second of all, I have to admit that I read this entire book in the bathroom.  The book is perfectly set up to do that—written in small bursts that are easily read while . . . sitting in the bathroom.  Finally, I don’t have five kids or any kids and I don’t live in New York and this book made me feel alternate […]

Reflections on Being a Woman

March 19, 2014 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8kpYm-6nuE] When I lived in New York, I used to watch Sleepless in Seattle all the time. That and When Harry Met Sally. Now that I’m back in Seattle, when I’m missing New York, I watch When Harry Met Sally, or You’ve Got Mail. No, I don’t have an obsession with Meg Ryan; I have a love of fun, sweet movies that feature two of my favorite cities and have interesting female leads. But there is a common thread across these movies, and that […]
