This is the 13th of the Preston & Child novels to feature the enigmatic, brilliant Special Agent Aloysius X.L. Pendergast and I think it’s time to give the man a well deserved break. Somewhere along the way, Preston & Child thrillers have become all about Pendergast to the detriment of the other characters in the series. After the harrowing and incredibly convoluted events of Two Graves, White Fire is a welcome break from the labyrinthine plotting that has plagued recent novels in the series. However […]
Answering The Call Could Be a Bit Risky
Think back to when you were 12. What were you doing? Meeting mysterious old (and I mean really, really, REALLY old) men who can stop time? Getting home to find an exact copy (or at least a close approximation) of yourself in your bedroom who is completely made from mud and who says he is a Golem and has been sent to take your place? How about battling a beautiful princess (at least when she’s not turning into a monster) whose mother is the Mother […]
Shambling Along
Full disclosure – I listened to the Audible version of this book whilst painting my daughter’s bedroom. It was a good light read for that sort of thing. (I did claim that my last book review would be the last one about zombies – and it was. While this book does have zombies, they are side characters and it’s not creepy…) Cute book – as cute as the cover. Spunky out of work magazine writer Zoe Norris (oops …she had an affair with […]
KayKay #CRB6 Review #12 The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
I normally read science fiction and fantasy, but last year one of my favorite books was ‘Where’d You Go Bernadette‘, a beautifully written story with a quirky lead. This book followed along that vein. The story of Don Tillman (who is undiagnosed, but has Asperger’s), a genetics professor. It’s about fitting in, it’s about being yourself, it’s about growing, it’s (of course) about love. I gave this book 4 stars. Here’s a breakdown…
The Thirteenth Tale (Competitive Non-Fiction)
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield is a gem of a story. While it took me a little while to get into it, I found that by the end, I was completely pulled in. Margaret Lea lives a rather small life. She spends most of her time working at her father’s antiquarian book shop where she arranges dusty books and deals with the occasional customer or helps a lost tourist. The vast majority of money for the family comes in through her father’s work as […]
3 down, 1 more to go in the series
This book is a more direct continuation of Gathering Blue. Matt, Kira’s friend from Gathering Blue lived in the ghetto of Kira’s Tribe. His parents were NOT nice. At the end of Gathering Blue, Matt had went with Kira’s father to live with him in The Village. The Village was founded by people who are not welcome in their own villages. Some travelled far and wide, some, like Kira’s father and Matt, came from just beyond the Forest. Now this Village, this is Utopian. Jonas, […]
