June 13, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

Category Six Adversarial Manifestation. That’s what it’s called when Lucifer Morningstar  – also known as the Devil, the Prince of Darkness or Satan  – shows up at your apartment brewing you are really nice cup of fair trade coffee. So, our hero Billy is a struggling writer, living in Queens, working in a sandwich shop, recently dumped by his girlfriend and well…he’s a bit of a loser.  He wakes up one morning with the Devil in his apartment, brewing a really awesome cup of […]

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

June 11, 2014 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

“We are not idealized wild things. We are imperfect mortal beings, aware of that mortality even as we push it away, failed by our very complication, so wired that when we mourn our losses we also mourn, for better or for worse, ourselves. As we were. As we are no longer. As we will one day not be at all.” I really tried, but I didn’t like this one. I feel like maybe I’m not the right audience. It’s a book about loss, primarily, and […]

June 10, 2014 by UniverseInMe Leave a Comment

June 8, 2014 by MyySharona Leave a Comment

First things first: If you haven’t seen The Room, you need to. Preferably in a full theater or with a bunch of people who know the routines that go along with the scenes, à la Rocky Horror Picture Show. I’m not sure how much I would have enjoyed it seeing it alone in my living room, honestly. But my first time seeing this at Alamo Drafthouse? Riotous laughter was yanked from me by the surrounding 200 people. Also there were collective shrieks of horror and […]

Elegance by Kathleen Tessaro

June 6, 2014 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Another impulse purchased that panned out! Elegance is two books in one. Our main character Louise picks up a 1940s dictionary called (duh) Elegance (an impulse buy for her as well) and it ends up changing her life. This dictionary has A to Z chapters about various woman-related subjects, from sweater seats to make up to proper ettiquette. While rather dated and occasionally ridiculous (such as, the entire chapter on furs), Elegance the dictionary guides Louise into realizing how unhappy she is in her marriage (to a cold, possibly […]
