Category Six Adversarial Manifestation. That’s what it’s called when Lucifer Morningstar – also known as the Devil, the Prince of Darkness or Satan – shows up at your apartment brewing you are really nice cup of fair trade coffee. So, our hero Billy is a struggling writer, living in Queens, working in a sandwich shop, recently dumped by his girlfriend and well…he’s a bit of a loser. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
“We are not idealized wild things. We are imperfect mortal beings, aware of that mortality even as we push it away, failed by our very complication, so wired that when we mourn our losses we also mourn, for better or for worse, ourselves. As we were. As we are no longer. As we will one day not be at all.” I really tried, but I didn’t like this one. I feel like maybe I’m not the right audience. It’s a book about loss, primarily, and […]
Wished there was more Golem and Jinni together time….
This book was all over CBR last year, and I had it on my list of books to read. A few friends decided to start a book club, so I thought this one would be good for discussion. I’m writing this review before the discussion, and so my feelings may change (that does happen sometimes!) At this point, I thought it was a beautifully written story with interesting characters. Riotous laughter was yanked from me by the surrounding 200 people. Also there were collective shrieks of horror and […]

This dictionary has A to Z chapters about various woman-related subjects, from sweater seats to make up to proper ettiquette. While rather dated and occasionally ridiculous (such as, the entire chapter on furs), Elegance the dictionary guides Louise into realizing how unhappy she is in her marriage (to a cold, possibly […]
