Poems about the Meaning of Life and What’s after Death

July 29, 2014 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

I don’t usually read collections of poetry, but since I’m going to be encouraging my students to read poetry, I figured I should get into the practice as well.  Plus it will give me some recommendations to give them.  And it doesn’t hurt to have a variety of books to review for Cannonball Read either.  So far this year I’ve only read few of Wadsworth’s poems including my favorite, Evangeline and now Charles Wright’s latest poetry collection, entitled Caribou. If I’m being honest I didn’t […]

“And I should tell him all my pain,…”

July 26, 2014 by drmllz Leave a Comment

And I should tell him all my pain, And how my life had droop’d of late, And he should sorrow o’er my state And marvel what possess’d my brain; (Tennyson, In Memoriam XIV.13-16)   Mad About the Boy, the third Bridget Jones book, is confusing. But then, Bridget Jones herself and her narratives are confusing; there’s the original Bridget Jones of the Independent newspaper columns, there’s Bridget Jones of the films, and there’s Bridget Jones of the books. I’m pretty sure that Bridget Jones of […]

Good Premise, OK Execution

July 20, 2014 by UniverseInMe Leave a Comment

This series was heavily reviewed on Cannonball last year.  I did read the sample, but it didn’t pull me in.  My book club had this listed as an option for our second book, so I figure I’d give it a chance.  Despite a very interesting premise, reading this book felt like walking up 148 flights of stairs.  I give this book 3 stars. Here’s a breakdown…

A witchy procedural

July 13, 2014 by UniverseInMe Leave a Comment

This book had the difficulty of being the first book I read after finishing the Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan (a 5 star experience).  This is also the sixth book in Juliet Blackwell’s Witchcraft Series.  It ended up being a nice quick read that helped me move on from Tower Lord.  The series is about Lily Ivory, a witch who has a way with textiles- meaning she can get impressions / vibrations from touching them.  There is a nice cast of supporting characters, including a talking pet/familiar – Oscar, […]

“You just have to make a commitment and hope you’re right.”

July 8, 2014 by Travis_J_Smith 5 Comments

Had my mother pulled the same stunt Georgie’s did with her step-sister Heather, calling me on my phone rather than just (Rowell sort of does for that word what John Green did for “okay” and I kind of hate her for her it on account of it’s just about half my vocabulary) getting my attention in person (being just downstairs; there’s that word again…), which she’d done once already moments before I’d peeled off the dust jacket (for safe keeping) and started reading, this is how I […]

Harry Dresden Hits it out of the Park Again

July 3, 2014 by anevilweasel 1 Comment

Nothing better than a Harry Dresden novel narrated by Jim Marsters. Well,  there are better things, but as audio books go, this is the top end. Love that man’s voice. And Dresden Files stories – well  – Jim Butcher just keeps hitting them out of the park. Ok so first things first : if you have never read a Harry Dresden book before, well this is probably not where you want to start. There are like…15 of them. Seriously …go get Storm Front. That’s the […]
