I read A Monster Calls written by Patrick Ness (however, the idea conceived by a different writer who succumbed to cancer before she could write it). I believe that the book is actually middle grade lit more than YA lit but I think it’s incredibly well crafted and deals with some dark, dark stuff. Don’t turn your nose up in scorn. This book will destroy you…in the best way possible…kind of? I think I’m still a little damaged by it. A boy named Conor is […]
A wonderful start to 2015
I had the most wonderful surprise waiting for me when I got back from two weeks in the UK. Well, we had random patches of cat vomit spread around the flat as a loving Christmas gift from our two cats, who we callously abandoned to be fed and looked after by various friends and family members, but I also had a package waiting for me on the living room table. So after feeding the demanding furry dictators we pretend are our pets and cleaning up […]
Put the book down and back away. Back far, far away.
If you are new to Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, this is not the place to start. Jason is a novella ostensibly concerning one of Anita’s closest friends and his girlfriend. Really it’s just an excuse for a chapters-long orgy scene. If you are a veteran reader of the series, do yourself a favor and leave it be unless you enjoy reading gratuitous, not particularly sexy, sex scenes. The best thing that can be said about Jason is that it was less than $5. It’s a […]
Stories and Personalities, Both Mixed Bags
#6: Legion by Brandon Sanderson: 2 stars. #7: My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories: 3 stars.
Wacky Pyschiatric Hijinks
3.4 stars, after debating whether to rate this book on the basis of what the author intended to do versus what she managed to execute, finally rating it based on what was actually on the page & the amount of enjoyment I got from reading it. Admittedly, I likely have a different take on this novel given that it’s about a psychiatrist with Capgras’ syndrome. I think this set up for the story peaked my interest, yet it was less exotic than it would be […]
Reading Ron
Ever since Ron embodied Hellboy for Guillermo del Toro (and oh my did he ever!) I have been interested in this indiosyncratic actors career. As his popularity rose with his turn as Clay Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, I found his demeanor and presence in interviews to be quite unexpected. Thoughtful, soft-spoken, intelligent but still little brash and rough around the edges. This book encompasses those aspects and more. Part memoir, part a call to arms for the next generations, he uses his own […]
