Oh Amelia Bedelia. She can either be seen as the most terrifying character ever due to the way she takes things so literally, or as a reminder that not everyone understands things in the same way, and sometimes we need to adjust or learn to communicate in new ways in order to facilitate different ways of thinking/people and how they are. In fact, at the end of the first Amelia Bedelia book, her employer Mr. Rogers makes a point of saying he will learn to […]
Cry All the Tears
I first decided to read this because of the comparisons to John Green and Rainbow Rowell. I almost didn’t read it because I was a little bit afraid. I read how the story made reviewers cry and I got nervous…but I am very glad I decided to read it. It’s a really sweet story about two teenagers who meet at their school’s bell tower. They eventually form a friendship as they visit all these sites in Indiana (Which are actually mostly real sites, something I […]
Grumpy Old Men
When I was still at university, I held a weekend job as a receptionist at a local nursing home. For most part, it was a pleasant experience: it paid well, it was challenging enough without being boring, and most of the people were friendly enough. There was, however, a small legion of despondent octogenarians – Stadlers and Waldorfs without the sense of humour or, indeed, each other, lonely and perpetually complaining about the ills of the society that had slipped from their grasp. I never […]
Cloudy With a Chance of Awesome
This is not only my first Cannonball Read book review, it is also my first-ever book review of any kind. I’m kinda nervous. I don’t even know what to do or say, so I’ll say this: I liked it. I didn’t love it, though I wanted to love it. It took me several tries to get past the first twenty-or-so pages of this book, and only just now, on the advice of a friend whose book opinions I value, I finished. I think this is […]
Connections
Thank you, Book Bub! This book was featured in a recent daily email and at first I thought it sounded too treacly and maudlin, but after sampling it on Amazon, I downloaded the book for cheap and raced through it in a day. The prose is lyrical without being flowery or overblown and the scope of the novel felt very cinematic. Following seemingly disparate characters in different time periods, this book explores the ways we are connected to each other and to the world. I […]
A Modern Adventure Tale for the Middle Aged Yuppie-Hippie
I vacillated between 3 and 4 stars and finally went with three for a few different reasons. For starters, the title, while super cute, is a bit misleading. I picked the book up off of the library shelves knowing nothing about it, looked at the title, and flipped through the photos section. Lots of pictures of the author’s adorable small children and wife hanging out in Churchill, Manitoba. Looked cute, heartwarming, a family adventure. However, the book actually goes in a lot of different directions, […]
