In Little Failure: A Memoir, Gary Shteyngart takes us through his early childhood in Leningrad, the beginning of his life as a Soviet immigrant in the States
I Hate You All
When I revisit books I read as a child, I notice things in them that didn’t attract my attention as a kid. Sometimes, like when rereading certain fairy tales, I am now struck by the violence,
Lust on the High Seas
Honor Bound by Brenda Novak is guilty of two of my biggest pet peeves: an ending that wraps up a little too neat and tidy, and a human character who is supposed to have violet eyes. The tidy ending is easy to ignore since I’m finished with the book anyway, but the violet eye thing really pulled me out of the fantasy. Because, really, that is not a thing. It’s just not. Besides those minor points though, this bodice-ripper was a pretty good time. It […]
The Girl on the Train, or somewhere. Who can remember?
I love me a good thriller but I didn’t love this. I expected to, given the glowing recommendations from several friends, but I only liked it. Rachel is not dealing well with her divorce nor with her ex-husband’s new marriage and new baby. She can’t deal well with anything because she’s a barely functional alcoholic. This proves troublesome as she makes a less-than-totally-reliable witness or reporter of events, given her blackouts and general poor decision-making skills. During her daily surveillance of her old house and […]
This book is too boring for me to come up with a good title.
I read Marie Lu’s Legends trilogy and was largely “eh” about it. They weren’t the worst written thing I’d ever read, but they weren’t terribly creative and the characters were boring. But when I saw Ms. Lu had written the first book in a new series, I thought I would give it a go. “The Young Elites is fantasy, it could be interesting. Legends was YA dystopian, I could just be burnt out on those, they’re everywhere right now.” So I swear I went into The Young […]
I’ll Trade You the Moon
This is a tough book to rate- there are things I really enjoyed about the writing and the story, and things that made me want to shake the characters nearly to death. Basic Plotline: Jude and Noah are twins living with a magical mother (and grandmother), and their scientifically-minded father (the artichoke). The story opens with Noah’s arc beginning at age 13. Noah is a quiet loner who is obsessed with art, and getting into the art high school nearby, when he falls in love […]
