“The witch owes nothing. That is what makes her dangerous. And that is what makes her divine.”

Waking the Witch by Pam Grossman

September 18, 2019 by NTE Leave a Comment

(This is another one of those quote heavy reviews, but ) So, I can’t be the only one who’s hearing a lot of talk about witches lately, right?  Podcasts?(including the author of this book’s own) Friends dabbling in crystals? Little sister shoving the Co-Star app at you and asking what time you were born??  I feel like witches are in the zeitgeist right now, one way or another, and as any The Craft-Matilda-Practical Magic loving 90’s teenage girl can tell you, not even for the first […]

“Now I am beyond prophecy.”

The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden

September 11, 2019 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

Everyone on this site who recommended the Winternight Trilogy: thank youuuuuuu! I devoured these books.  Like, ignore dinner, stay up til 3 am, read all lunch break.   Try to read slowly to savor, but can’t because it just is so good. Continue to recommend to everyone who would listen.  I think it’s so rare to find a trilogy that reads so well, for so long.  I can’t wait to read it again! So, back up, these are the second and third book of Katherine Arden’s […]

Bullet with Butterfly Wings

A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn

A Perilous Undertaking by Deanna Raybourn

A Trecherous Curse by Deanna Raybourn

A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn

September 5, 2019 by lumenatrix 3 Comments

I’m putting all four cover images on here right from the get go because I would be lying if I tried to say that I didn’t start this series because of the cover art. I totally did start this series because of the cover art. It is fabulous and, even better, it is a perfect match for the stories contained inside. In A Curious Beginning we meet Veronica Speedwell. Veronica is a woman of science. She is a lepidopterist of skill and renown and she […]

Here a book, there a book, everywhere a book!

The Library by Sarah Stewart

September 4, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am sure I have not written a review of this before, but if I have, I am also fairly sure I have changed my opinion of The Library by Sarah Stewart and David Small. This book has rhyming text and sweet illustrations. It makes this not only a classic book in feeling but has kept it going since 1995. Making it a contemporary classic in my book. A story about a reader, the library (or libraries actually) she built, and a swell old gal […]

Slimy but oddly satisfying….

Hungry Jim by Laurel Snyder

September 4, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While reading Hungry Jim by Laurel Snyder, I was picking up on a vibe I could not really figure out. In the back of my head, I was thinking, “that’s um…. what is this style like?” It clicked after reading the authors afterwards. This book is a takeoff of Maurice Sendak’s work. And it does a good job of bringing that out but keeping Snyder’s voice. But since I am not a huge Sendak fan, I was not picking that up at first, but once […]

No connection between these, I’m just behind

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzie Lee

September 3, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Holy moses I got so behind, and I still have one more I need to review but with the amount I’ve been talking about it offline, it definitely deserves its own review from me. So let’s get started. The Bride Test, by Helen Hoang I read and reviewed the first book in this series, The Kiss Quotient, and wasn’t so prude I wouldn’t read the second, so here we are. I like that the two books are connected without this one feeling like a sequel (a […]
