Under My Bed, In Your Head

The Man In My Basement by Walter Mosley

March 31, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

When I reviewed Walter Mosley’s Debbie Doesn’t Do It Anymore, I wrote at length about how his late period works take on this sort of mumble-noir tone with an atmosphere that feels ethereal. Much like Mosley’s Leonid McGill series, these all seem to take place on a parallel plane of human existence. Mosley seems more interested in using these stories to explore the existential rather than tell a simple gangster or noir tale, like say the Easy Rawlins series. For the most part, in his other books […]

Adult Actress

Debbie Doesn't Do It Anymore by Walter Mosley

March 26, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

Walter Mosley is one of the more unique and versatile mainstream writers out there. Most noted for his Easy Rawlins mystery series, Mosley has also written some simple noir tales, science and speculative fiction, and other stuff that can be difficult to categorize. This one falls in the other. I’ve always meant to read a non-mystery by Mosley and what better time than being isolated during a pandemic? This one is an interesting tale. There are crime elements but it’s not really a crime story. […]

Bodies Hit The Floor

Killing Williamsburg by Bradley Spinelli

March 19, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

A big ol’ content warning: this book is about suicide. Suicide is on almost every page. The book itself includes graphic depictions of suicide and bodies in a post-mortem state as a result of suicide. Though I won’t go into detail myself, there’s no way to avoid talking about suicide in this review. If you are triggered by suicide or have a history with suicidal ideation, please skip both this book and this review. … Along with Colson Whitehead’s Zone One, this is another New York […]

Dirty Jobs

South of Heaven by Jim Thompson

February 11, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

The Year of Jim Thompson continues…with my least favorite version of his novels: the semi-autobiographical one that describes a job in granular detail and tries to shoehorn a crime story in. A great example of this is Nothing More Than Murder. I thought learning more about how the business of movie theater ownership worked in the 1940s would make for a compelling tale. I was wrong, very wrong. I don’t remember much about the crime story in that one but I do recall a lot about handling […]

Great Guide to the Most Magically Stress-inducing Theme Park

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2020 by Bob Sehlinger, Len Testa

February 10, 2020 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2020 by Bob Sehlinger My rating: 4 of 5 stars Having read “The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando Resort” several times and had a successful trip to UOR, I decided it was time to see what advice they had for a trip to Walt Disney World. I wasn’t disappointed. This book is quite thick considering there’s four parks that comprise WDW as well as an abriged section on UOR (apparently a lot of people make UOR a part […]

Important Tips for Doing a Theme Park Right

The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando 2020 by Seth Kubersky

December 29, 2019 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando 2020 by Seth Kubersky My rating: 5 of 5 stars Just like in 2018, when I read my first “Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando Resort,” I found the advice, information, and research to be immensely helpful for having a great vacation. I recently returned from UOR, shamefully having not completed my reading of the book before hand, and can say that without the touring plans and accompanying app, we wouldn’t have had such a good time. For the first […]
