Happy Thanksgiving!

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan, et al.

Mrs. March by Virginia Fieto

Quarry's Vote by Max Allan Collins

The Man Who Came Uptown by George Pelecanos

Hit List by Lawrence Block

The Overlook by Michael Connelly

Happy Thanksgiving! In addition to feasting on food, I spend the holiday feasting on books. After a few long reads, I plowed through some things I’ve been meaning to get to for a while. Enjoy! Y: The Last Man **** I was excited to finally read this, being a big Brian K. Vaughan fan and being intrigued by the premise. Stephen King blurbed this as the best comic he ever read. The TV show looked good and I wanted to get in on it. And […]

Up Close and Personal

Intimacies by Katie Kitamura

October 9, 2021 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of CBR13Bingo: uncannon. The novelist is of Japanese descent and her book comes from the perspective a non-white character.  Reading Intimacies was a beautiful struggle. I wanted to like it more than I did. It has a lot going for it. But it’s kind of a donut book in that there’s a big hole in the middle: we know almost nothing at all about the protagonist. There’s little about her background, who she is, what her interests are, etc. Katie Kitamura even withholds her name. […]

They Knew Each Other By the End

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

September 28, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR13bingo: flora. There are trees and plants on the cover.  If I were to teach a class on creative writing, I would without question assign one of Liane Moriarty’s books. The only other one I’ve read of hers was Big Little Lies, mostly because her accuracy on relationship dynamics is so painfully on point that I can’t stand it. I imagine I’ll finish her catalog someday. Whether I do or not, she’s a writer that perspective writers should study. Her characters are so […]

“Oh my God. My fantasy crush is a gynecologist. My gynecologist.”

Wrong by Jana Aston

June 30, 2021 by NTE 8 Comments

That’s it: that title is the whole book.  Um.  I just… this book.  I don’t even know? Hot guy comes into a girl’s work for coffee all the time. She gets a crush on him.  Then she goes to the gynecologist, and guess what? or more Guess who? “I can reschedule you with another clinic doctor if you’re not comfortable, Sophie.” I’m not comfortable but I blurt out, “I’m fine!” Admitting I’m uncomfortable would be even more uncomfortable. See: That’s pretty relatable, because how do […]

Ladies and Gentlemen, the (reading) Weekend…

Bleeding Edge by Thomas Pynchon

Times Square Red, Times Square Blue by Samuel R. Delany

Queer: A Graphic History by Meg John-Barker, Julia Scheele (illustration)

Widespread Panic by James Ellroy

Quarry's Cut by Max Allan Collins

June 20, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read a variety of books close to and over the weekend. Let’s check it out… Bleeding Edge **** This is a 2021 reread and it’s better than I remember. The ending disappoints but it’s still an entertaining, prescient novel. Pynchon warned us about Too Online culture and yet, here we are.   Times Square Red, Times Square Blue **** I don’t know what I expected but it wasn’t this. And I liked it! Mostly. This is like a tale of two books. It’s two essays […]

A fun introduction to tarot especially if you want to read for others

Kitchen Table Tarot by Melissa Cynova

May 8, 2021 by Mobius_Walker 5 Comments

This is another entry in the Kitchen Table series by Melissa Cynova. This book, Kitchen Table Tarot, is an introduction to tarot cards and tarot reading. Cynova breaks the book down into three main parts: an introduction to tarot and tarot reading in general, her interpretation of the cards and how she reads, and a guide on how to do readings for other people. Overall, I felt that the the first and third parts had enough overlap that having multiple chapters at the start and end […]
