Black Flame by Gretchen Felker-Martin

October 3, 2025 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

A few days after I finished the Black Flame novel by Gretchen Felker-Martin, I was trying to describe it to a coworker. I was not doing a good job. I said it was horror and you could see it at a surface level or in a deeper manner. We follow a woman, who is a seriously closeted lesbian, who restores old film. She is used as the “official Jew”  (she is called the “mailroom Jew” when sent to meet a reporter who is deliberately hurtful, […]

Unremarkable? Not anymore, Brian Reyes!

Unicorn Boy Volume One by Dave Roman

September 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One weekend I had no energy to do anything but move my eyes across a page, as I sat and turned pages of a book. Therefore, I sat on my porch, propped a book onto the table that lives there and read Unicorn Boy Volume One by Dave Roman. Which if the cutesy cover didn’t clue you in to the fact that it is a super fluffy and light book, the title would have. Not to say it is bad, but for an adult who had […]

I still don’t understand how you get “Jet” from “Margaret.” CBRBINGO – ‘N’

Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson

September 27, 2025 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a bit of a disappointment for me, but I still had an overall good time with it. I don’t understand why Holly Jackson keeps writing books about Americans when she is very British. (Nothing of hers has hit for me like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.) There was also a key moment at the end of the book that was totally dumb and out of character, which I’m deducting 0.25 stars for. But the mystery was very well plotted and intricate, and […]

The Tenant by Fredia McFadden

The Tenant by Fredia McFadden

September 26, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. I have to say that this was probably the best McFadden book I have read since “The Housemaid.” Also, this is the first of her books that the main character we follow is a male character. It gave a different perspective as they were the protagonist. Usually male characters pop up as a side character and we may or may not get their point of view towards the end of the book or they are the antagonist of the book. I honestly didn’t know […]

A Mediocre Procedural

Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell

September 24, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Bingo: Border. Story deals with the borders between good and evil, life and death, rage and reason. Patricia Cornwell’s Postmortem is the first in her Kay Scarpetta series. Scarpetta is chief medical examiner and she is plunged into a case where four women have been assaulted and strangled. The book is a standard procedural about a serial killer with relatively poor characterization. Scarpetta is not a compelling protagonist; she is somewhat stiff and colorless. Her colleagues in law enforcement are typical types—sexist gruff police officer, […]

A Merciful Death by Kendra Elliot

A Merciful Death by Kendra Elliot

September 22, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Trigger warning: Rape This is going to be my last book in this series. I got interested in the character of Mercy Kilpatrick since she popped up in a Bree Taggert book. But this was just all over the place. I didn’t like the plot following these preppers who often in real life are racist as anything. I think Elliot skipped that whole thing purposefully because I think she thought she was doing something with hey preppers got good points about making sure they grow […]
