The LONG Long Goodbye

The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis

April 8, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

I picked this up thanks in large part to Megan Abbott’s review. It’s not her fault, though, that I didn’t like it. For Goodreads, Abbott talked about the book’s similarities to Robert Altman’s movie The Long Goodbye, mostly in terms of aesthetics, a forgotten Los Angeles, as well as the narrator’s anxiety. The Long Goodbye is one of my all time favorite movies, Chandler but better. So I had to grab this. And yeah, she is right that it gets the aesthetics well. I deeply felt […]

Shake your Team Pom!

The Adventures of Team Pom V01: Squid Happen by Isabel Roxas

The Adventures of Team Pom V02: The Last Dodo by Isabel Roxas

April 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have been trying to read The Adventures of Team Pom V01: Squid Happen and The Adventures of Team Pom V02: The Last Dodo for I do not know how long! I found an online reader copy ages ago, and when I recently uncovered it, unlike the others that are older and have been deactivated, these two never went away. And I am glad it did not, as Isabel Roxas has one funny story series on their hands. Publisher description says for book one: it […]

Starting off my CBR (in April!) with a trio of crappily edited books

Stolen in a Small Town by Marie Wilkens

The Willow Springs Kidnappings by Roger Hayden

The Cabin by Robert J. Walker

April 5, 2024 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Welcome to my first post for CBR 16. I know it’s April. I’ve been a CBR posting slacker. I’ve been reading like a maniac though! I’ve read 33 books this year, so I figured it was about time I started posting about them!! Let’s get started… I think I started this trio of books at the end of 2023, but didn’t actually finish the first one until January of 2024, so it counts! They came as one book on my Kindle, but they were 3 […]

The White Man’s Burden

Trofee by Gaea Schoeters

April 4, 2024 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Hunter White has one passion in life: hunting. And he’s about to achieve the pinnacle of his favourite hobby: he has purchased a license to shoot a rhinoceros, thereby completing the Big Five, something he has dreamed of since his grandfather took him hunting as a young boy. He considers himself a skilled hunter, someone who respects the craft. No cheesy poses on top of a lion for him, no semi-automatic weapons, no faff. Just him, and the animal. And several local guides, of course, […]

Rain, rain, go away. I thought my reading count looked too low and then I realized I didn’t do leftovers for February, so here’s Feb-March combined. The Wars of the Roses: The Fall of the Plantagenets and Rise of the Tudors ***** Jones is such a talented historian. Gets all the important stuff of the Wars of the Roses in great detail and lets the story entertain. His Templars book will soon be on my radar. A Lowcountry Bride**** Had to read this for a library […]

I wanna live like common people

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

April 3, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

This is the second book I’ve read by Rachel Hawkins. I loved her first book, The Villa, which centered around an Italian villa which was the site of a mysterious death in the seventies. This second book centers around heiress Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodwar Miller Kenmore. Ruby first became famous when she was just a toddler after being the victim of a famous kidnapping (think Lindbergh baby with a happier ending). She’s been married and widowed four times which only adds to her notoriety. When […]
