June already? Sheesh. The Brass Verdict**** Ever since John Grisham lost his fastball in the late-90s, I’ve mostly forsaken legal thrillers. But I like the Bosch series and I wanted to read something LA-based and this delivered. It’s a fun plot with some legit exciting twists. Will probably go back to it at some point or maybe watch the show. Interior Chinatown*** I wish I liked this one more than I did. The satire is razor sharp, the story is deep and the pain is […]

I read two fun books

The Chilling Ice Rink Escapade by Michael Anthony Steele

Willa and Wade and the Way-Up-There by Judith Henderson

June 3, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Two books I recently read to help cleanse the palette some more (I was still working on a horror book I thought was Young Adult, but would lean a bit more adult, and therefore, more graphic , so maybe it was “new adult?” But regardless it was a lot to take and I needed “happy time” to clean my brain) and to see if one of them was good for the nephew. I picked up (as an online reader copy) Willa and Wade and the […]

What lurks in the corn

The Girl in the Corn by Jason Offutt

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I’m starting my review of The Girl in the Corn, with the that there are big time TRIGGERS in this book. After all, it’s a horror book and therefore there are several horror images. Perhaps they could be more so, but even what they do show (such as the murder of a child, the brutal murder of the dog and several other people, plus drug use/abuse, guns, kidnapping, sex, and what I consider rape) is not pleasant to say the least, and, of course could […]

Ladies, please lock your doors.

These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall

May 31, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

Sometimes when reading a mystery or thriller book, when the ending is being telegraphed really hard, I think it must be a misdirection. Then, when the telegraphed ending is revealed as a big shocking twist, I wind up disappointed. This, along with an inability to connect with the main character were two of the main issues I had with These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall. The story follows Mickie Lambert, a twenty something woman who creates “digital scrapbooks” for mostly older adults who […]

Suspension of Disbelief on Steroids

I Will Find You by Harlan Coben

May 28, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

David is serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of his young son five years ago, but he is adamant that he did not commit the crime. When his former sister-in-law Rachel visits with what may be a photograph of his son – still alive – he becomes determined to break out of prison and figure out the truth. This is my second Harlan Coben book, and while they are very different from each other I was suprised to see a small link – […]

Just when you think you know everything…

The Girl From Guernica by Karen Robards

May 27, 2024 by katie71483 Leave a Comment

I don’t recall why any longer, but the other day something sent me down a Kindle rabbit hole search for a specific Karen Robards book. There was a point in time when Ms. Robards was an automatic purchase for me – if I saw a new book on the rack at the grocery store or at Barnes & Noble, in the basket it went. Like many authors from the late 90s and early aughts for which I had this habit, she kind of fell off […]
