Happy Thanksgiving to all who observe! Catch and Release *** Been angling to read more LB lately so I figured I’d knock out this short story collection for my monthly HCC read. Sadly, the results were predictable: a repetition of serial killers, hit men and un-sexy sex. I just can’t sink my teeth into books featuring short stories and this one was no exception. I enjoyed visiting Matt and Mick at Grogan’s again and the last story was fun but beyond that? Who lotta eh and […]

Kansas City Confidential

Kingdom Quarterback: Patrick Mahomes, The Kansas City Chiefs, and how a once Swingin' Cow Town Chased the Ultimate Comeback by Mark Dent and Rustin Dodd

November 25, 2023 by Jake Leave a Comment

I think I have a thing for books like this and want to read more of them. I visited Kansas City twice. It was fine. Unmemorable. I mean, I didn’t dislike it. I just didn’t get a good grasp for it. And I don’t think I have an east coast snob’s bias against midwestern cities. I enjoyed my time in Cincinnati and Indianapolis respectively. I just didn’t find much going on in KC outside of great barbecue and the excellent Negro League Hall of Fame. […]

Nobody is Skating on Thin Ice

Wei Skates On by Nathan Chen

Pop’s Perfect Present by Corey Finkle

November 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I am still trying to clean up my older reader copies from my online list, I have found a few new ones as well. And the below tiles came out earlier in 2023, which I read via online reader copy. And both are fun books that fit today’s themes with diverse characters and a single parent.  Do you like to ice skate? Wei in Wei Skates On really likes it. In fact, so much they started as a toddler and by almost double numbers […]

Now I’m curious about book two

Squire & Knight V01 by Scott Chantler

November 17, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What do you do when you are looking through your old online reader list (and trust me, it’s a long one as I have some from 2022 still on there), and you find a book you want to read, but are not sure because it is about Knights and you’re think you’ve maxed out your Knights stories for the year (mostly because you are not looking for the Hero story or the Don Quixote story when it comes to knights)? You say, “It’s not like […]

Footballin’

About Three Bricks Shy of a Load by Roy Blount, Jr

November 14, 2023 by Jake 1 Comment

Something tangential to the book before I address the book itself… I’ve read several tongue-in-cheek books written by white men in the 1970s, of which this qualifies as one. America was dealing with the fallout from the 60s; Black people had made leaps and bounds in their rights but counterrevolutionary political forces stymied full growth. As such, the early-to-mid-70s presented a sort of post-transition time when white people were trying to understand an integrated world. And thus, many of the white male writers I read […]

Peanuts, Cracker Jack, pop flies . . . and physics?

Science, Matter and the Baseball Park by Catherine Ciocchi

Finley: A Moose on the Caboose by Candace Spizzirri

October 30, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not usually a baseball fan or science fan, but some times things happen within a book to change that. And while Science, Matter and the Baseball Park did not make me want to run and join a baseball team or get season tickets to the local science museum, it did make me go, “well now. Ain’t that a bat to the noggin.” (But in a good way.) Catherine Ciocchi, Burgen Thorne and Chantelle Thorne made a book that brings the theme of Matter […]
