Bowing down to pressure

Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What do you do when you’ve a two week vacation and you’re tired of playing games on your phone? You find the stack of books you have and start reading. And one of those books was Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer.   I’ll start with that it is a fun, modern coming of age story that deals with GLBTQ issues and the pressures we put on ourselves versus just “having fun” when we are doing things that we should/could enjoy.  I will then go on to […]

Pack on Wheels

Blood City Rollers by V.P. Anderson

March 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read Blood City Rollers by V.P. Anderson and illustrated by Tatiana Hill via an online reader copy.  I know that I will not be reading it again when it comes out, or buying a copy as there were several spots that I was not “digging” and felt they were not as fleshed out as they could have been. It might be easy to do roller derby in a graphic novel, but it might not be the easiest subject if you are adding vampires, witches, […]

How You Get the Girl by Anita Kelly

February 20, 2024 by Emmalita 3 Comments

I would read Anita Kelly’s grocery list. I loved How You Get the Girl. It’s just…perfect. Julie Parker is coaching a girls high school basketball team, which is fun and rewarding, but she feels adrift and left behind everywhere else in her life. Her twin sibling, London, from Love & Other Disasters, is in a committed relationship and is doing work they love. Her best friend, Ben, from Something Wild & Wonderful, is getting ready to move from Nashville to the Pacific Northwest to live with his love, […]

Study to Prepare for the Dumb but Hopefully Fun Thing

Trail Running From Start to Finish; Runner's World Complete Guide to Trail Running; The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running by Graeme HIlditch; Dagney Scott Barrios; Adam W Chase and Nancy Hobbs

February 11, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So I might have done something a little dumb and signed up for a mountain trail run somewhere I’ll be in about 6 months for work; why might this be dumb? Because I don’t live near mountains or significant trails to train on. Also, I don’t actually do much trail running; I’m more of a road/sidewalk runner. The 25k distance doesn’t bother me, but the first few miles going about 1,000 feet almost straight up? That makes me nervous. So what do I do? Get […]

Liz Tomforde And My Straight Sports Romance Conundrum

Mile High by Liz Tomforde

The Right Move by Liz Tomforde

Caught Up by Liz Tomforde

February 2, 2024 by LagiNazar Leave a Comment

As a queer romance reader, I’ve been really frustrated with myself for the past few years. For some reason, I just don’t enjoy queer romance novels as much as I do ‘straight’ ones. Obviously, there are exceptions, but often, I feel like a lot of these romances are written in unintentionally heteronormative registers, which dulls the chemistry and the tension that makes a book sing. A significant exception to this, I have found, is the ‘Sports Romance’ genre [given my familiarity with Archive Of Our […]

Pancakes, britches and home

Pancakes for Findus (Findus and Pettson) by Sven Nordqvist

The Van Buren Sisters vs. the Pants Police by J.F. Fox

A Garden Called Home by Jessica J. Lee and Elaine Chen

January 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Picture books are a great way to read books and have fun as well. You not only read a book (and can read several in a day: Think of a tailor and some flies and “seven in one blow”), but you can learn something. Like how to make pancakes out of your pants, or what britches are, and even that some plants need snow to help them grow. And not only that, you can just have a delightful story you can solo read or read […]
