Please note you have seen this author before, just under different names. But know that they still love their minions who read their novels.

Into the Real by Z Brewer

August 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo They/She/He Into the Real fits the They/She/He category on at least two levels. First, Z Brewer goes by they/them. They have had a journey of self-discovery since their Vladimir Todd series days to this most recent novel. (I am currently reading another book by them that came before this with another name).  And due to the main character, Quinn, taking a journeying to find their own gender identity, eventually learning the word genderqueer, also allows it to fit this category. When Quinn finds themselves bouncing […]

I need cute kittens, bunny, ice cream and my fuzzy blanket after reading this manga graphic novel!

Beast Complex Volume One by Paru Itagaki

August 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo Cityscape What a freaking, fracked up, screwed up ride! (only I didn’t say freaking or fracked). I picked this as the Cityscape block as you see the dirty city behind the camel and wolf on the cover. And the stories are set in this same city and in a boarding school within that city. The cover story is the reason I give this book a 3 and not 4 as I was planning after the first few stories. That story made me want to […]

Dresden short stories made for enjoyable health stomps

Side Jobs by Jim Butcher

July 29, 2021 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

CBR 13 Bingo Square: Old Series – The first Dresden Files book, Storm Front, was published April, 1st 2000 Side Jobs contains eleven short stories, little adventures that happen between the novels.  Some were written for promotional reasons and some were written at the invitation of anthology editors.  These stories occur from before Storm Front to just after Changes.  This was my first audio book experience and I enjoyed it immensely.  Ardaigle’s waxing rhapsodic over James Marster’s narration convinced me that I needed to hear it for myself.  […]

Things are different in Wales

Ivon by Michael Aylwin

Early Riser by Jasper Fforde

July 27, 2021 by Merryn Leave a Comment

CBRBingo – Sportsball and People As I read Ivon, I couldn’t help thinking that this would be a much better book if Jasper Fforde had written it.  Fforde is a master of taking a crazy premise and populating it with such skillfully drawn living breathing humans that the setting becomes real. This is Aylwin’s first novel, and he isn’t there yet. In the world of Ivon, sport is everything.  Set in our future, after a series of pandemics that killed off all but the fittest, almost all of humanity […]

“But somehow I’m still here, and he’s still here, and even though I still feel like a hopeless case, this thing between us doesn’t feel hopeless at all.”

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

July 27, 2021 by Dome'Loki 8 Comments

CBR 13 Bingo Square: Shelfie THIS BOOK!  After having reread Carry On and Wayward Son, I was primed for Any Way the Wind Blows.  I devoured it so quickly that I immediately reread to be able to slow down and better absorb the story.   Rowell brings the Simon Snow trilogy to a satisfying close but what an emotional journey to get there.  Carrying their hearts on their sleeves, Simon and Baz are so vulnerable and continually bracing for the pain that might come.  Penelope’s decisions and the […]

“The Only Currency More Powerful than Money in this World is the Violence of Man.”

Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu

July 26, 2021 by Ale 1 Comment

I found the Library of the Dead when searching online for books that were like The Starless Sea.  As always, I got it (for free) out of the library to do a cursory read before committing to purchasing. And while there weren’t that many similarities between Morgenstern’s book and this one, Huchu’s first foray into speculative fiction is a great success. I’d never heard of Huchu before, but I will definitely be checking out his other publications based on how much I enjoyed this read. Edinburgh has […]
