I keep telling myself, “I do not like horror…..”

Hide: The Graphic Novel by Kiersten White and Scott Peterson.

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I keep telling myself, I do not like horror. Yet, I keep picking up horror related books, and did so with Hide: The Graphic Novel. It is adapted from the novel by Kiersten White, illustrated by Veronica Fish and Andy Fish, with the adaptation by Scott Peterson. Now it isn’t “gory horror” but yes, there is gore (it is about 14 people trying to survive the “game” and well, the stakes are pretty high). It is icky and there is blood. But you know, tastefully […]

Carl and Donut’s Guide to Dungeon Crawling as Reality TV

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

February 8, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve had Dungeon Crawler Carl on my TBR for a while (picked it up as retail therapy not too long ago, but it’s been on a list for good bit longer), and then there was a spike of reviews on here, so now here’s my take. I kind of do get the hype; there’s humor but it’s kind of dark by necessity, there’s hope in the midst of tragedy and chaos, and it’s mostly pretty entertaining. The basic story feels kind of like a mish-mash […]

Artificial Condition

A charming book about a literal killing machine

Artificial Condition by Martha Wells

February 1, 2025 by stegolily 1 Comment

“Artificial Condition” is the second book in Martha Wells’ acclaimed series, The Murderbot Diaries. I read the first book, “All Systems Red,” a few years ago, and while I liked the premise, I had a hard time getting into it and didn’t continue with the series. I picked up “Artificial Condition” on a whim this month, and this time, I was hooked. Maybe it’s actually better than the first book, or maybe I’m just in a different headspace now. Either way, I found this book […]

The book, "Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries" by Heather Fawcett is standing in front of two books with fairies on their covers.

“To peel back the carpeting of the world and tumble into the stars.”

Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

I read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries in two days.  Since I didn’t want to start a new book until I caught up on reviews, I decided to read it again. It took only two days to read it a second time.  What I’m saying is that I enjoyed this book so much I read it twice in four days.  Written in the style of a personal journal, Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries is an engaging fantasy set in an alternative 1909 where fae, fairies, Fair […]

Polyandry in a world where Big Brother demands to know all

An Excess Male by Maggie Shen King

January 16, 2025 by denesteak 4 Comments

It’s been a while since I’ve read a novel. Though if I’m honest, it’s been a while since I read, period. So I’m glad my jump back into fiction was with “An Excess Male” by Maggie Shen King, because this was an interesting meditation into what-could-be if China were to maintain its one-child policy (also if the world didn’t end in the next 20 years due to climate disasters). “An Excess Male” is set in the not-so distant future – the blurb says 2030 – […]

Twenty is just a cog in the wheel of the utopian society in Hourglass by Barbara Mazzi. Or at least for  the privileged.  Twenty is trying for one of the coveted positions on the team of engineers. If you make it to the top the reward is everything. But until then, they help keep the Hour Glass running so the privileged few can reap the reward of immortality. But when a real piece of the machine goes missing, more than the Hour Glass will fall […]
