Anansi Boys-An incredible novel

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman

March 27, 2019 by MarkAbaddon Leave a Comment

I admit it, I am a Neil Gaiman fanboy. So, when I tell you that this is one of the best works Neil has ever written, please believe me. This is Gaiman’s second novel and the growth from American Gods, which takes place in the same universe as Anansi Boys, is remarkable. Anansi begins, as so many tales do, with the tragic death of a main character on stage, performing karaoke, and accidentally exposing the breasts of a young woman as he tumbles off the […]

A Classic Ray Bradbury Story

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradury

March 27, 2019 by MarkAbaddon 4 Comments

There are books that you feel you know through one medium or another (television, movies, radio, etc.) which you then read and find that it is completely different than what you expected. This was the case for me with the brilliant novel Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. I had been familiar with the story through the 1983 film, which scared the bezeesus out of me when I was a kid. The original novel, however, is so much better. The story focuses on […]

Time travel + Jane Austen Historical Fiction + Romance & Spycraft = This book.

The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn

March 26, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

SO. I was actually a bit nervous going in to this since most of my friends on Goodreads who’ve read it didn’t like it very much, if at all, but I liked it quite a bit! I acquired it when a friend was moving a while back and basically let me have free reign on her bookshelves (such a good haul), and then ignored it until I pulled it out of my TBR Jar for February. Though I shake my head at the way the […]

A lack-luster follow up

Access Restricted (Word$ 2) by Gregory Scott Katsoulis

March 24, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I enjoyed All Rights Reserved last month and sought out Katsoulis’s follow-up Access Restricted only to be disappointed. I began reading this book almost 3 weeks ago when I was in Arkansas for a funeral but I only finished it this weekend when I realized I needed to turn it back into the library on Monday. Spoilers for All Rights Reserved~ At the close of the last novel Speth Jime, along with Kel, Henri and Margot, have disrupted the WiFi of their dome in order to give people the […]

Four Voices, but Two Left Out, Fifth Unknown

Blackfish City by Sam J. Miller

March 24, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It took me a little while to get into Blackfish City thanks to the narrative style, but in the end that turned out to be one of the strengths on the novel. The basic premise is that there are a handful of people wandering around the floating city of Qaanaaq who eventually discover their connections to each other, as well as to a mysterious stranger who shows up riding on an orca, accompanied by a polar bear. The story is told through their alternating perspectives. […]

A boy, his canoe, and the beginning

The Book of Dust Vol. 1 : La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman

March 20, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I quickly and deeply fell in love with Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy.  The ending of the third book has me in tears each time I read it.  However, when I heard that he was writing a prequel with Lyra “at the centre of the story”,  I rolled my eyes.  We already have three books where she is a main character.  How much could have happened to her before the start of The Golden Compass?  Then last year a fellow Cannonballer warmly reviewed it (apologies, […]
