I’m a cat person, Beanie, but I still love you.

What’s Up Beanie?: Acutely Relatable Comics by Alina Tysoe

June 11, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you see the title, What’s Up Beanie?: Acutely Relatable Comics and only see the word Beanie as that was the nickname of your best friend growing up (we meet the night before the first day of kindergarten and in true kid form the next day we said, “I know you! You’re my friend!” and the rest was BFFs for several years and a around 40-year off/on friendship) you know you must pick it up. The book starts with Baby Beanie, a four-year-old who comes […]

The book Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn sitting on a wooden table top with a leafy plant behind it.

So much fun it helped with my reading slump!

Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn

June 9, 2021 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Fellow Cannonballer, Teresaelectro, first brought Heroine Complex to my attention.  Then it was a featured book title for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Mysterious Galaxy.  I was about to go and to pick up May’s book order, when on a whim I called and asked if Heroine Complex was in stock.  It was and I purchased it over the phone, to bring home with the books that were waiting at the store. Due to events this year, I have found reading to be […]

A lot of characters to follow, three plots, and wondering if or when it will all make sense

A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine

June 6, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It took me way longer to really get into A Desolation Called Peace than it did A Memory Called Empire. Part of the problem in A Desolation Called Peace is that there are too many different groups and places that take almost ¾ of the novel to really come together. I get that that is a technique for suspense, but it doesn’t work terribly well here, especially when Mahit’s thread has so little to do with everything else which actually does eventually connect. It feels […]

Great premise about a character who is freed from a cult but wants to go back; did not like where he went with it.

First, Become Ashes by K.M. Szpara

June 1, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I am going to continue reading this author’s books because I always find them compelling and interesting, but I think I might have to get the next one from the library instead of buying a pricey hardcover on the back of a tasty premise. This one is making me feel saucy. I was really looking forward to this book! The premise sounded amazing, and I love reading about cults, fictional or not. But the author took it in a direction that I thought was the […]

“This is not a heroic age.”

The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks

May 30, 2021 by Halbs Leave a Comment

The Player of Games is the second in seven “Culture series” novels by Iain M. Banks. However, the novels don’t need to be read in order (or so I’m told). I started here and got along just fine. In The Player of Games, Gurgeh is a well-known game player in The Culture – what appears to be a federated community of like-minded humanoid and synthezoid beings dedicated to the finer things in life. Work isn’t necessary, space is free to roam, decadent space islands are […]

Fun with the Fire Force

Fire Force, Vol. 20 by Atsushi Ohkubo

May 30, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Fire Force is an entertaining but somewhat mindless adventure manga series; one of the good things about it is that it doesn’t always take itself too seriously. In a world where human spontaneous combustion is a real threat and most of the world fell apart during a “Great Cataclysm” fire some years before the action starts, Fire Soldiers of the Tokyo Empire are there to do standard fire-fighting but also fight “Infernals”, basically fire monsters that are the result of someone spontaneously combusting. Company 8 […]
