The Golden Apples of the Sun by Ray Bradbury

May 14, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is an “early” collection of Ray Bradbury stories, from 1953. These came out a few years after The Martian Chronicles and are collected from about 1948-1953 when the book came out. These feel a lot like many of the pieces from The Martian Chronicles and provides a sense of narrative consistency in his writing. They are not quite pulpy like many of his early stories, mostly involve men and male narrators, and hold up pretty well, especially compared to early collections by other sci […]

After creating a new residential area in the shape of a Mona Lisa jigsaw puzzle, the new owner went out & shot 6000 dogs. But this still left a dog pop. of 165, 000 to a human pop. of 89,000.

Sixty Stories by Donald Barthelme

May 10, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I feel like Bilbo Baggins addressing the Shire on his eleventieth birthday party: “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” I like exactly two of the stories in this collection a LOT and like when I get opportunities to reread but especially read them aloud or have them read aloud. And then I didn’t really care that much for almost any other in the whole […]

I don’t even bother making resolutions any more..

New Year, Same Trash: Resolutions I Absolutely Did Not Keep (A Vintage Short Original) by Samantha Irby

May 9, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

New Year, same trash is another book I discovered on Kindle unlimited. It is by one of favorite writers at the moment, Samantha Irby. It is a list of 70 resolutions, what she calls micro resolutions, that she basically fails at one after the other. It’s very funny. She’s a funny writer. I’m kind of bummed I didn’t get to listen to it as an audiobook since I like her voice even more than her writing, but such as life. “48. Try to think positively. […]

I love you dearly but if I’m going to be throwing up, I’d really rather be at home.

Winterfair Gifts – 3/5 Stars This is a reread from a few years ago when I read all of the Miles Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold. I also started rereading them last year and got through about half before I stopped short, but I bet this will get me started started again. This book also starts out or sets of to tell the story through an alternate perspective from the other books. So far we’ve had Miles being the lead protagonist in the most […]

What a Great Short Story!

Death on the Edge by Sara Paretsky

May 3, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I have to say this was fantastic! The only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars is that I guessed what happened with the mystery about who wrote the essay. I loved the callback to a past case of VI’s and her annoying nemesis from that one popping up in this one (Marcena Love). In “Death on the Edge” VI gets involved in introducing Marcena to her old school in order to talk to a teacher who is concerned about an essay that was […]

An interesting appetizer

Take big bites by Linda Ellerbee

April 26, 2019 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I love reading about food, I love reading about travel, and I REALLY love when books include recipes (Hey there Ruth Reichl; your carbonara recipe from Garlic and Sapphires – I think- is a household favorite and my future cardiologist thanks you). This book may have been written for me. Appropriately enough, I read it over several lunch breaks at work, and this is probably the ideal way to read it. Despite the title, the chapters are probably best read with space in between; Ellerbee […]
