A Good Introduction to the World of Indigenous Comics and its Creators

Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection by Hope Nicholson

September 11, 2019 by Lisa Bee 1 Comment

CBR11 Bingo Square: Reader’s Choice (replacing: Classics) Let me begin by saying that I did indeed want to read a classic for my classics square: I really wish I could get into the old language more, but it’s such a struggle for me! And truth be told I did start reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but I just kept drifting and realized about a tenth of the way in that I wasn’t up to the task (so instead I connived my friends into watching the movie […]

Move across the country…

Someone who will love you in all your damaged glory by Raphael Bob-Waksberg

September 9, 2019 by Claire Badger 1 Comment

Do you like Bojack Horseman? Do you need something to hold you over while you wait for season 6? Are you maybe nursing a sore heart or wondering if you’ll always be alone or if being with someone always feels like this or if it’ll ever just get better? Do you like run-on sentences that verge on neurotic but somehow veer just on the line between charming and twee? This is the short story collection for you. These stories speak to you and are written […]

What a Struggle and Letdown

Unnatural Creatures by Neil Gaiman

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

This book took me so many days to force myself through. I should have just DNFed it and found another book for the “Supernatural” square. Ah well. Not too much to say here except that most of these short stories were a flop IMHO. I have to say that the way these stories are pieced together doesn’t really work very well at all. The flow between stories is so sharp and I keep getting taking out of each story as soon as I move on to […]

CBR11Bingo: The Collection & Reader’s Choice — BLACKOUT!

A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction by Terry Pratchett

Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land

September 8, 2019 by badkittyuno 4 Comments

Woohoo! I’ve got a blackout board and I’m almost completely caught up on reviews (10 left after this one). A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction by Terry Pratchett I don’t normally read or really enjoy short stories, so this is definitely a good example of Bingo making us broaden our horizons! I found this short story collection by searching “collection” on Overdrive. I had thought I might reread some Stephen King or Neil Gaimen short stories, but when I saw this Terry Prachett […]

Little Disturbances of Man by Grace Paley

September 5, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I highly recommend all of Grace Paley’s writing, and this book is not my favorite of her work, but it’s part of a journey I love having with her. I read a Grace Paley story in a creative class years ago, and I loved, but I felt like to created an unfulfilling promise of what her work contains. There’s a passage in AS Byatt’s Possession where the male lead opens his door to fifteen hungry cats looking up at his face and the resulting indulgent […]

Why Shouldn’t Quiet Be Strong? (CBR11 Bingo)

Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert’s Story by Debbie Tung

September 2, 2019 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I love a list, LOVE them. When Bingo is unveiled I happily settle in and draft up what books I want to read for what squares, cross-referencing them with my other reading challenges to see which books might cross-pollinate, and finally devise a schedule to try to get a Blackout by the time Bingo wraps up. It worked perfectly last year as I snuck in just under the wire with my 25th review. This year its been a slightly more bumpy road, two months in […]
