When We Cease To Understand the World cover

not what I thought, but I enjoyed it nonetheless!

When We Cease To Understand the World by Benjamín Labatut

May 29, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This book varied wildly from story to story, and there were parts I liked a lot more than others. On the whole since the parts I liked were so very much a bullseye for “Things I Will Read 100% Of the Time,” I can forgive the parts between which were “Things I Will Roll My Eyes At And Abandon Books For.” Despite disliking non-fiction, historical non-fiction stories of science (or math) is my kryptonite. And as such, this novel–with its lightly (to heavily) embellished stories […]

A collection that’s a little all over the place, but wholly enjoyable

Hex Life by Christopher Golden, Rachel Autumn Deering

I do not think I am the target reader for a short story. I value stories that have complete resolutions. I want characters that have had the chance to rise and fall, succeed and fail, and sometimes more than once. These things are not always the aim of a short story. I get that, and yet I keep going back to these collections. This is one of the first collections that I have read that are all written by different authors. Though each story centers […]

Killer Come Back to Me by Ray Bradbury

May 22, 2022 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Ray Bradbury can do it all: science fiction, horror, crime, fantasy, mystery. One of his most famous books is Fahrenheit 451, but he’s written tons of short stories. The collection Killer Come Back to Me is a compilation of Bradbury’s crime stories. Bradbury’s way with language makes common things new again. From one story: “Mr. Willis tonked a laugh out like cleaning your pipe on a flat stone”; “Peter [he shouted], show him, but it was all underwater. Blood pounded around on big red boots.” […]

Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaption by Gareth Hinds

May 3, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you love graphic novels, stories by Poe, or thriller stories, (and are in your teens to adulthood) then you should try this graphic novel adaption, Poe: Stories and Poems: A Graphic Novel Adaption by Gareth Hinds. Included are a handful of Poe’s more famous and infamous stories and poems. Each are laid out in all their gory, I mean glory. Having the illustrations, which are dark, lacking in color, but filled with details, allows to see some of the images that might have not […]

Wouldn’t it be funny if?

Skeleton Crew by Stephen King

April 29, 2022 by blauracke 2 Comments

I’ve owned this book for 20 years probably, and I think this was my third read through. It is a collection of short stories and some of King’ s earliest work, and the stories are of widely varying quality. Some made me roll my eyes, some left me indifferent, and some were gripping, but there is one I dislike immensely, and two that I kind of love. The one I dislike is the well-known and apparently popular “The Mist”, which takes up about 150 pages […]

These were 100% cover reads, but they (mostly) ended up being great!

The Tiger Came to the Mountains (The Trespass Collection, #1) by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Wildlife (The Trespass Collection, #2) by Jeff VanderMeer

The Backbone of the World (The Trespass Collection, #3) by Stephen Graham Jones

Stag (The Trespass Collection, #4) by Karen Russell

A Righteous Man (The Trespass Collection, #5) by Tochi Onyebuchi

Bloody Summer (The Trespass Collection, #6) by Carmen Maria Machado

As mentioned in this post’s title, I saw these covers and immediately went OOOOH. Click click click. Free? Okay! Also, the idea of various genres of story that deal with nature and wildlife clashing with humans appeals to me. I did four of them by audio, and all four narrators were excellent (even for the one I two-starred), and two by Kindle. If you have Prime, they are free for you. Some of them really surprised me! “Wildlife,” by Jeff VanderMeer — 2 STARS This […]
