We’re all the same to them

The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen

December 6, 2022 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“Yours is a lucky generation.” “I wouldn’t say we were so lucky,” Phuong said. “You’ve never appreciated what you have.” Her father waved his hand over the meal and Phuong squeezed her glass, bracing to hear the stories of her parents one more time. ……. “Phuong was bemused at how these tourists would want to spend their money and their day here, instead of at the beach, or at a fancy restaurant, or in a hammock at a rustic riverside café. The reason for such […]

A Point in Time Series Review

Naomi's Gift by Martha Hall Kelly

Ash Wednesday by Paula McLain

Landing by Olivia Hawker

We are Bone and Earth by Esi Edugyan

A Wild Rose by Fiona Davis

Alison's Conviction by Thomas Keneally

Mother Swamp by Jesmyn Ward

Per usual, here are my reviews for each short story in the collection. Overall, this collection at times moved me and made me do more research on certain events brought up which is why my reading this week was slow (for me). Naomi’s Gift by Martha Hall Kelly (5 stars)-Phenomenal. You can figure out where Kelly is taking you, but I honestly was shocked at the the whole Holocaust camp for women/mothers/children. I keep thinking that there is nothing that could shock me at that […]

“There is beauty in my truth, and I have so much to share.”

The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2022 by Edited by Rebecca Roanhorse

December 3, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I look forward to this collection every year and so it was a treat to see it pop up in the bookstore recently. The selections are always varied and interesting, and John Joseph Adams should get special kudos for all the preparatory work he does before he chooses the best 80 stories and hands them over to the guest editor to choose 20 for publication. In contrast to the 70s SF/F anthologies I’ve been slogging my way through this year in the hopes that there […]

Into Shadow Series Review

The Garden by Tomi Adeyemi

Persephone by Lev Grossman

The Six Deaths of the Saint by Alix E. Harrow

Undercover by Tamsyn Muir

What the Dead Know by Nghi Vo

The Candles Are Burning by Veronica G. Henry

Out of the Mirror, Darkness by Garth Nix

December 3, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. I really wish this series of short stories had been released around Halloween, some of the stories are very good and the horror/fantasy elements are great. There are at least two stories I wish had been longer novels (The Six Deaths of the Saint and Undercover) because of how good they were and how much I didn’t want the stories to be over when I got to the end. “The Garden” by Tomi Adeyemi (2 stars)-This one compared to the other books in the […]

Greek Myths: A Retelling

Greek Myths: A Retelling by Charlotte Higgins

November 27, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

I thought this was so good. The cover was fantastic and I loved that as I read this one (I bought this in hardcover yesterday at a local bookstore) the cover sparkled. Higgins does a great job of following Greek myths through many of its famous women, but they are all linked by the loom and their weave depicting some of the terrible things the gods and goddesses have done. We start off with Gaia and Uranus and how their offspring where the Titans. And […]

The scorn is as high as an elephant’s eye…

1922 by Stephen King

November 24, 2022 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

1922 is a novella by Stephen King. It centers around a small family trying to run a farm in Nebraska: Wilf, Arlette, and their child Henry (who prefers to go by Hank, pleaseandthankyou). The story is written through the eyes of Wilf, who is making an end-of-life confession about the events of the titular year. As he tells it, his wife Arlette owned 100 acres of pristine farming land adjoining the family lot, and she was hell bent on selling it to a slaughterhouse company. […]
