Meeting new friends and reuniting with old

May 29, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This is a collection of short stories, most of which take place in Tamora Pierce’s Tortallan Universe.  Well, six do, and four take place in other fantasy settings, and there’s one nonfantasy story that was inspired by one of Pierce’s early jobs.  I liked all of them, although one of them was a bit spoilery for me, as I haven’t read the books that it follows.  (They’re sitting in my TBR pile right now, actually.)   “Student of Ostriches” This story follows Kylaia, a young […]

Yer the Savior, Harry Potter

May 28, 2017 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 5 Stars I can’t believe I’m finished. Seven audiobooks in four months! Part of me is happy that I stopped reading the series when the movies came out because I don’t think I would have been a fan of the adaptations . And so we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows or, JK Rowling Continues to Kill her Darlings. Again decade old spoilers for the book and movies. The WW2/ Nazi dictatorship similarities are strong in this one: muggle-born […]

I Might Be in the Minority Here, But I Wasn’t Really Feeling This One

May 25, 2017 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

What a contrast to go from a book that I gave 5 stars to something that I’m not sure ever fully engrossed me. While the odd story here or there within the collection peaked my interest, overall something was missing here. I have previously read Joe Hill’s sublime graphic novel series Locke & Key –which was absolute breathtaking– and therefore had some high hopes with this short-story collection. This, unfortunately, led to some disappointment on my part. 20th Century Ghosts is a collection of short […]

Midwestern Magical

May 23, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

Deborah Coates skyrocketed to the list of authors I will always read when I read her debut novel, Wide Open, in 2013. A western Urban Fantasy managed to perfectly capture the feeling of the American Northwest. My dad’s side are ranchers in Montana, and I spent a lot of time there on my grandparent’s ranch when I was growing up. Reading Wide Open was just a little bit like being back on the ranch, despite being set in South Dakota. Since that time, I have […]

“Never love a wild thing…If you let yourself love a wild thing. You’ll end up looking at the sky.”

May 14, 2017 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

While I was gearing up to read Fifth Avenue, 5 AM (and by gearing up I mean placing it on my library request list) when it struck me that, while I’ve seen the film numerous times, I’ve never read the novella in which Holly Golightly is based! Our unnamed narrator is reflecting on the past after an old friend calls him with news about a woman, Holly, he used to know. Holly Golightly has left her home town and reinvented herself as a society girl. She drinks […]

“High heels on the mossy path. Tippity-tap. Toddle on.”

May 13, 2017 by Mrs Dillemma Leave a Comment

Hilary Mantel, twice winner of the Man Booker Prize, released a collection of short stories – titled The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher and other stories –  in 2014 and I have finally finished the compilation. This collection peruses a host of difficult topics; misogyny, culture shock, adultery,  alternate realities and much more. While the subject matter is different across each story there are similarities that occur throughout the collection; Mantel has a great eye for the minutiae  of suburban life, the dreck of urban reality […]
