Between Ragnarok and a Hard Place

June 16, 2018 by sempernox 1 Comment

When I was a kid, I was fascinated with ancient mythology. My favorite myths were those from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, but I tried to read everything I could get my grubby little hands on. I thought that myths provide a deeper understanding of a particular culture, specifically their understanding of self, their environment, and their place in the universe. For example, isn’t it interesting that the “great flood” is a recurrent theme in myths cross-culturally? And what about the common theme of resurrection, […]

Thank you, Julie Murphy, for continuously not sucking.

June 15, 2018 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

I’m sorry to say that Meet Cute was my biggest reading disappointment of 2018 so far. It had everything I thought I wanted: how-we-met short stories from some of the best YA authors out there — including Julie freaking Murphy — and a recommendation from Rainbow Rowell. I assumed it would be a delight. And some of it was. I had never heard of Ibi Zoboi, but her story “Hourglass” was my favorite of the bunch. She told a story about Cherish, a tall African-American […]

Ain’t she sweet

June 6, 2018 by Shibuyama 2 Comments

There was a post going around tumblr for a while referencing “the knowing eye contact women make when men are talking,” which someone else helpfully supplemented with this illustrative gif from Carol* (and if you’re looking at this opening excerpt from the CBR top page, you do have to click through to see it, I’m afraid):   The Ladies of Grace Adieu, by Susanna Clarke, feels like the prose manifestation of that post. Set in the world of her popular novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr. […]

Y’all, Reese Witherspoon has a book club!

May 24, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

It’s hard to believe that the girl from Cruel Intentions and Sweet Home Alabama* would grow into a feminist, taste making mogul but here were are and Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorite people to watch for their next move. She has optioned countless books into film and television projects, many I’ve already read & loved, and I seek out a lot of her recommendations. All of this is to say I was thrilled to discover Reese has an Instagram book club! May’s book club selection was Curtis Sittenfeld’s You […]

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story?

May 22, 2018 by Jen K 4 Comments

On the one hand, I very rarely read short story collections because I also have a strong desire to finish a book once I start, and if I read too many short stories in a row, I get irritated about not getting to spend more time with characters. Collections of short stories related to series don’t count since those are opportunities to experience short side adventures, thus having more time with beloved characters.  On the other hand, Atwood’s Gertrude Speaks is one of my favorite […]

Who doesn’t love a good (nearly) mad scientist?

May 20, 2018 by alphabootoo Leave a Comment

I picked up this book because of Pajiba but in a somewhat circuitous fashion – the story about Faleena Hopkins trademarking the word “cocky” included a link to Marc Whipple’s blog, Legal Inspiration. The sidebar on his blog includes a blurb about the fact that he also writes books with a link to his Amazon writer’s page, so I took a look. His blog post was very informative and since one of his books looked like something I would enjoy I decided to pick it […]
