“Holmes,” I cried. “Is it really you?”

October 31, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

While gathering my thoughts to start writing this review, I kept getting the feeling that this was my favorite of the Holmes story collections so far. With this feeling in mind, I moseyed on over to Goodreads to look at my status updates to try to collect evidence to back it up (I rate and do mini-reviews for every story), whereupon I found to my surprise that my reaction to most of the stories was just good, not great. It’s a solid story collection! However, only two out […]

I highlighted the crap out of this book

cbr10bingo… Delicious! So the subtitle of this book is “true love in and out of the kitchen”, and it applies to both self love and love of someone else.  This is the author, Hannah Howard’s true story about her life of eating and eating disorder.  From the very start of this book, I could relate to Hannah.  Thankfully (for me), she was way more messed up than I ever was, but she might be further along in her recovery journey than I am too.  Thankfully […]

Well it felt like a chore

This is for my backlog CBR square because I bought it at the same time as my white whale about three years ago, and despite being a tenth of the size it took me about as long to finish. This was such a letdown; this book was booooooring.  I really wanted a fun book with an “Ask a Manager” vibe, as I enjoy true life tales of mundane absurdity from the hoi polloi.  A few contributors have since gone on to bigger things, there are […]

From multiple attempts, I stab at thee!

This is my CBR White Whale for two reasons. One: I don’t remember when I bought this book, but I’m certain I wasn’t pregnant and the kid is one and a half, so it’s been a minute; two: this beast is nearly 1000 pages.  I’m a sucker for cheap books and this was dozens of short stories about time travel – my favorite sci-fi variation – for 2.50 at a local bookstore. I had to buy it, especially because the authors included in this short […]

The Magic’s Gone

October 24, 2018 by octothorp 2 Comments

This is my bingo square for “Two heads are better than one” as a friend recommended this as a book club selection that we never actually got together to discuss.  I was not the only speed bump, there was much Facebook chatter from the group about who was attending and who’d read the book.  One party was on the fence about whether to start. John and I had read it. So here’s our exchange: Me: I was… not a fan. I liked a couple stories […]

I Will Sparkle Like a Wealthy Woman’s Neck

October 8, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

CBR bingo entry 3 leads me to my “Birthday” space for Sloane Crosley, who turned 40 August 3rd this year.  (And yeah, she was gonna be my “so shiny!” entry but Ken Jennings was born in May and I don’t get that many books hot off the presses because I’m cheap, AND her debut was I Was Told There’d Be Cake, for pete’s sake, so I had to change her to my birthday square.  But I still liked how the title works with her tone; […]
