“The future may make these famous stories facts of history!”

Man Against Tomorrow by William F. Nolan (Editor)

March 25, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

This was honestly a pleasant surprise in my continual quest to work through the classic SF/F collections in my possession. I think this is in large part attributable to the fact it’s from 1965, so is pre-New Wave. This era clicks with me, as does contemporary sci-fi/fantasy. It’s really only the 1970s and a chunk of the 1980s where I run aground. Man Against Tomorrow is a reprint collection which I enjoyed almost every story in, a real achievement in my opinion. FINNA by Nino Cipri

“Of course Jules was alive, they had never faced a challenge whose ass they couldn’t kick, and they had the stores of righteous rage that all retail employees collected.” ― Nino Cipri, Finna “It’s okay,” Jules said. They looked….not calm, exactly, but not scared. They looked, as they had for most of their trip, thrilled that they weren’t getting misgendered while answering customers’ stupid questions about how much weight a towel rod could really hold. ― Nino Cipri, Finna Ava works at LitenVärld and she […]

Nowhere Book Bingo: An epistolary novel CBR16 Sweet Books: Binge (I have already bought the next two books in the series in paperback, so I can read all of them as soon as possible.) Unicorn Crush: Another Phoebe and Her Unicorn Adventure by Dana Simpson

The First Cat in Space and the Soup of Doom by Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris

March 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like the series Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson. Now, I don’t like every book or even every “joke” but I like how Phoebe is a loveable (frankly) dork, that is way relatable, even as an adult. When I found an online reader copy for book 19, Unicorn Crush: Another Phoebe and Her Unicorn Adventure I was intrigued. It had been awhile since I had read one, so figured it was time. Now, there isn’t anything really “new” to talk about, Phoebe is […]

Different person, same love

Every Day: The Graphic Novel by David Levithan

March 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you’ve worked in kids and young adult books as long as I have, you learn some “big names” of the biz. One I knew I never had to read (but probably should because they were good) was David Levithan. I recommended them on repetition alone. Therefore, when the opportunity came to read Every Day: The Graphic Novel I knew the Reading Gods were telling me to go for it. First, a graphic novel (a favorite reading genre for several years now) and second, David […]

“I was happy, but I also wasn’t. Something was missing, here. Or not missing, but sleeping. But nothing here could wake it up. It made me feel alone. I don’t know how else to explain it.”

The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez

Well I didn’t finish this in time for book club (it was my pick 😂 ) but I did finish it! And it was excellent. [two and a half months later] Okay, so, I am largely incapable of writing reviews in 2024 it seems, but I wanted to say things about this! Firstly, I am going to lower this down to four stars because in the past two months, it really hasn’t stuck with me as much as I thought it would, the way that […]
