A witty and satirical take on social networking, society and privacy.

May 5, 2014 by Renton Leave a Comment

The Circle is the world’s biggest social network. Part Google, part Facebook and all encompassing, it’s a seemingly benevolent force that everybody is signed up with, and the workplace to aspire to. So when Mae Holland is offered a job, it isn’t hard to see why she’s so enamoured with it, rising her way up the food chain and buying into everything that entails. There are tell-tale signs that the company might have more power and reach than necessary, but she brushes them off, even […]

“Vulcan’s Forge”: Star Trek Novel Vangie13 cbr #44

May 4, 2014 by Vangie13 2 Comments

by Josepha Sherman & Susan Schwartz “Romulans do many things no sane Vulcan would do.” Star Trek meets Lawrence of Arabia in a long, derivative, repetitive, imitative novel. A year after Captain Kirk is lost to the Nexus, Captain Spock and the crew of Intrepid II are called to Obsidian to help Spock’s childhood friend Captain David Rabin with a diplomatic mission. The story takes place in the past on Vulcan and in the ‘present’ on Obsidian. Years ago, during the ceremony celebrating the Kahs-wan […]

Another Grim Dystopic Future by Atwood

May 4, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Another of Atwood’s famous dystopic novels, this one the first in a trilogy based on an apocalyptic future after the genetic manipulators and profit-mongers have prompted a sort-of “Noah’s Flood”  in the form of an engineered plague to wipe the slate clean. Crake, the genius who created the plague, is gone but his “children” live on as a handful of bioengineered innocents intended to repopulate the world under new—Crake’s– guidelines.  Crake’s appointed “shepherd” for this flock is Jimmy, now known as the Snowman, who managed […]

Sign me up for super armor

It seems I was just saying it’s hard to find a good sci fi/ fantasy book with a female lead and here I found two in a row.  Heaven’s Queen is the third (and final) book in the Paradox Series.  Since this is the third book, it’s hard to say much without spoiling the series, so, in general, I’d just say this was a good series with a satisfying (but predictable) ending.  I’ve probably said too much…  I am going to give this book 3 stars. Here’s a breakdown…

Found Love in a Hopeless Place

May 3, 2014 by UniverseInMe Leave a Comment

It’s hard to find a good sci fi/fantasy book with a female lead.  Patricia Briggs pulls it off the best with her Mercedes Thompson series.  Ann Aguirre has a pretty good showing here with The Dread Queen.  Dresdemona Devos (Dred) can hold her own against the boys, with or without her chains.  She is tactical, tough and cares about those close to her.  She has some ability to ‘see’ emotions in others auras, which gives her some insight.  In addition to a great main […]
