Do Androids Dream of … Revenge?

August 23, 2014 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

With this 2013 novel, Ann Leckie has won the Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke and, as of last week, Hugo awards, and has been nominated for the Philip K. Dick award. Ancillary Justice has a complex, fascinating plot and in its protagonist a kickass corpse soldier. I picked up the book because the author is a woman (serves my quest to read 50 books by 50 women this year) and it has won so many prestigious awards. I’m often wary of Sci Fi — it’s not […]

Y’all are gonna get so sick of me gushing about this guy

August 20, 2014 by Bothari43 3 Comments

This is only my second China Mieville book, and I can already tell he’s going to be a favorite. I didn’t love this one as much as I loved The Scar, but I am in awe of his writing and his imagination. There’s so much going on in this book I’m not even sure how to tell you about it, and it’s all complicated and juicy and intriguing and awesome. There’s a planet way out on the edge of the explored universe, inhabited by beings […]

My Life as a White Trash Zombie

August 16, 2014 by anevilweasel Leave a Comment

Awesome book – totally.   First saw this at “Zombie Runner” coffee shop in Palo Alto on California Avenue….started to read it and had to have it. Our WTZ is Angel Crawford – pill popping, high school drop out with a record.  Lives in Louisiana with her drunk ass dad in a house with a driveway made of crushed beer cans.  Hangs out with her stoner, trailer dwelling boyfriend Randy and works a McJob a the gas and grab.   Until one night, she […]

Jane Austen, meet Margaret Atwood.

August 15, 2014 by bonnie 3 Comments

Paging Jane Austen enthusiasts! Paging Jane Austen enthusiasts! This is pretty much the greatest Austen adaptation I’ve read–and I’m including Longbourn, which is the second-greatest Austen adaptation (and I’ll be honest–it was a close call. If you don’t like sci-fi or speculative fiction that much, you may give the preference to Longbourn, which is totally understandable. But you really don’t have to like sci-fi to enjoy this novel). I first heard of this book, because scootsa1000 read it and gave an excellent summary and review. […]

White Trash Zombies Rule

August 15, 2014 by anevilweasel 1 Comment

Fourth in the series of the White Trash Zombie books. These are hilarious. I listened to this one on Audible.  Our heroine – Angel Crawford –  is indeed a white trash zombie. Backstory – 3 books back, she was a loser white trash drug addict, got picked up by the wrong guy in a bar, ended up in a (what should have been fatal) car crash and somehow survived with no injuries whatsoever.   Took her a while to figure out that someone […]

Wizard Harry Dresden in fine form in Death Masks

August 10, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Harry Dresden is a highly respected (if impoverished) wizard among the supernatural scene, and when a Vatican priest calls on him to help find the stolen Shroud of Turin, he is thrilled to take the job and the fee that goes with it. He is less thrilled to learn that horribly mutilated bodies and hit men are turning up in the investigation, and that Chicago crime-boss Marcone seems to be in the thick of it. At the same time, a top noble of the Red […]
