Oh, wow. I think I have found my 2014 favorite for CBR. If you have not read Station Eleven, make it a priority. Even if you don’t like post-apocalyptic writing, you need to read it. It transcends the conventions of the genre and is a beautiful, uplifting, sad book. Arthur Leander is a famous actor doing a theatrical rendition of King Lear when he drops dead of a heart attack. EMT Javeen Chaudhary rushes on stage to save him and meets child actress Kirsten Raymonde. […]
Didn’t get it; liked it anyway
The last time I reviewed a Delaney book, I said the writing was good but the story was too simple. This time, the writing is still good, and the story is too complicated. I guess I just need to find the Baby Bear of Delaney books. It’s far in the future, and humanity has done away with themselves in a nuclear fashion. The beings that came after are strong and suited to the environment in different ways – some with gifts that seem downright magical. […]
Kid, I’m Gonna Make You a Star!
What with all the focus on Hollywood, Sony, the Interview….time to revisit an old favorite. “Agent to the Stars”. The premise here is that the alien Yherajk would like to make “first contact” with Humanity. Trouble is, they are hideous and smelly. Lucky thing they realize the need for a good agent! Hot young agent Thomas Stein gets the challenge of a lifetime when they contact him and request that he successfully manage Earth’s first alien encounter. They seriously need a makeover, some spin, perhaps a little work […]
Alien invasion love
Collision is part one of a new alien invasion trilogy from Berinn Rae. Sienna, an ex- military brat and recent widow stumbles upon a crashed ship near her remote home. Against her better judgement, she goes inside to investigate. She discovers a super hot human-like man (except for his unnatural golden skin) unconscious on floor. Another weird guy passed out who may be dead. She drags the golden man outside just before a crazy winged alien attacks. The two creatures point weird guns at each other with […]
Time for some swashbuckling fantasy!
Forty-first book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read fantasy and it was nice to go back to it. Nine Princes in Amber is more of a hack and slash style of Fantasy, but it was an interesting read nonetheless. The first half builds the story in terms of shrewd discoveries made by the protagonist Corwin, himself one of the nine living princes of Amber, a fantastical city which is supposed to be on the ‘real’ earth […]
Spies in Love
A Spy to Die For is the second book in the Assassins Guild series. Instead of a sequel, Kris DeLake cleverly decides to push two minor characters from the first book to the forefront in the same timeline. It’s more a take two on the events of the first book, Assassins in Love. The set up is the same, two strangers working for rival organizations are thrust together by chance. Jack Hunter works for the Rovers, a group of rogue mercenaries who refuse to join the Guild. Skye […]
