The Trouble with Poet is How Do You Know It’s Deceased…

January 16, 2015 by sabian30 2 Comments

Lucifer’s Hammer – Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven – 1977 When I saw this on a used bookstore shelf, I recalled I hadn’t read it since the seventies. Something about a comet hitting Earth and the struggles of the survivors in California trying to save civilization. Feeling the need for a hard dose of pure science fiction and inspired by the recent news of the European Space Agency’s spacecraft landing on a passing comet, I bought a copy to reread and was surprised how timely […]

Fox can’t take this sky from us…

January 15, 2015 by TylerDFC 4 Comments

Few things in pop culture are as disappointing as the cancellation of Joss Whedon’s western tinged science fiction series Firefly. Sure we got a movie out of the deal, and a pretty damn spectacular one at that, but there was so much potential in the concept that to be cheated out it by Fox stings worse than most premature cancellations. Well, all that is in the past! Following in the footsteps of Firefly’s big sister, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, the continuing adventures of the Firefly […]

Holy Crap Guys, These are Great!

January 15, 2015 by Alexis 13 Comments

I received Red Rising from Scootsa1000 (THANKS!!!) and ordered the sequel, Golden Son before I was even finished the first book. These books are bloodydamn great and you should buy them both immediately. I don’t have the words to do them justice and I’m afraid my fumbling attempt might mistakenly convince you that, “Eh, it sounds like other YA dystopian books, been there done that. No thanks.” This would be a mistake. Red Rising is the story of Darrow, who is a miner deep in […]

A Last Natural Wilderness

January 14, 2015 by A.Winfree 4 Comments

Milan Kundera wrote “Beauty is a world betrayed… [t]he only way we can encounter it is if its persecutors have overlooked it somewhere.” You know that feeling of discovering something beautiful? Something, perhaps, overlooked? In the case of a book, chances are that you didn’t really “discover” it, not in any real sense of the word. Someone else discovered it, and then a lot of other people discovered it too – after all, there it is, printed and bound and sitting in your lap. But maybe you […]

“the sparrow still falls”

January 14, 2015 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

Many moons ago I read Dreamers of the Day for CBR4. I loved the prose, and marveled at the rich character development even if my review isn’t as effusive (the book has grown on me over time). The author, Mary Doria Russell, has received positive reviews over the course of the many Cannonball Reads, so I decided that I wanted to jump back in with this author. I put The Sparrow on my library request list, and when the email came in that it was […]

Ms. Marvel; the Delight of the Origin Story

January 14, 2015 by tillie 1 Comment

You must have heard about Ms. Marvel – it’s the most important comic of 2014; it even says so on the cover! What’s so important about it? The new Ms. Marvel, Kamala, is a muslim. I cannot believe that it’s 2015 and stories with non-white, non-Christian people is still such a big thing. It is a step in the right direction though, that is; it’s another story. So this review will focus on the actual story. Which is an origin story. I love a good […]
