A little more apocalyptic than I was expecting

March 25, 2015 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So this was another free Kindle book.  They’ve been hit or miss.  This one was mostly a hit.  I say mostly because I think it was a little bit too short.  It felt like they tried to jam an entire apocalypse into a too-small book.  I loved the story, I loved the idea of where the apocalypse was coming from, and I loved the creatures.  The characters were almost great, but they too suffered from a little bit of rushing/smooshing. The story begins when a […]

He Just Dropped In to See What Condition His Condition Was In

Joe Haldeman’s The Old Twentieth (2005) – I’ve been a big fan of Mr. Haldeman since he wrote several of the early classic Star Trek pro-novels (some of the better ones in my opinion) and the science fiction classic, Forever War. When his name appears on a book, I generally pick it up. I like his type of story – hard science fiction with some thought behind it. This novel, The Old Twentieth, has a couple interesting tropes going for it. Not just the trials […]

Some of Us Are Not as Dumb as All of Us

March 24, 2015 by sabian30 1 Comment

How is it possible that a book about early DNA science could be so mind-numbingly boring?   Perhaps being written in 1978 by real biochemists is the cause. We’ve all been heavily educated by Hollywood on the dangers of DNA manipulation since then. That doesn’t excuse pages of classroom exposition on what splicing DNA means and the dangers thereof. It has way too much technical jargon and not enough plot. The point of the story (I think; I might have fallen asleep during the third or […]

They never say the word “zombie.”

March 23, 2015 by Amanda Leave a Comment

Some time in the not too distant future, a virus sweeps across America.  It can be deadly but isn’t always.  Those who die sometimes come back as “Reboots,” especially the young.  Broken bones now heal in minutes, senses are faster, better, and the Reboots still age and can have babies.  There is chaos and panic and hysteria, of course, and eventually a war between the Reboots and the humans. It seems most of America, between the virus and the war, are wiped out.  All that’s […]

Coming off the rails

I knew heading in that the second book in the Divergent series was kind of a train wreck, but I am a completist. I am persistent and stubborn and I was on a strong female protagonist kick! I wanted something better, but it was as bad as I had been warned. This second novel seemingly takes place immediately after Divergent ends, although it is hard to know for certain, as Roth is not very good at giving the reader a sense of the time passing. […]

Rocket Raccoon is the best.

I read some article over the summer when the Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out that listed this as one of the books I should check out if I wanted to beef up on Marvel shnizz before seeing it. I never got around to it, and I’m kinda glad. I would have expected a much different movie afterwards if I had. This is actually the book where the current incarnation of the GOTG were created. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning pulled together the new […]
