Engaged but not Engrossed

May 11, 2015 by sistercoyote Leave a Comment

So…I don’t know if I wanted to enjoy this book or not. I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if it weren’t for Ancillary Sword being part of this year’s Hugo nominations, and because I don’t like reading/watching sequels without first having read/watched the, well, first in the series.

Military Sci-Fi with Side Dishes of Geopolitics and Theology

May 7, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I did not expect to appreciate this book as much as I did. As you can see from the cover, the book looks very much like Halo. The cover led me to believe I was in for the novelization of a space marine-type video game. What I got instead was a nuanced military sci-fi story with an interesting and diverse cast of characters, realistic geopolitics, and real-world tactics. Knox’s Irregulars is the story of Randal Knox, the son of a national leader of New Geneva. […]

Seriously Mark? Seriously?

May 6, 2015 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I have read and listened to some really good books this year. It’s going to be hard to choose a top 5, but I’m pretty certain that The Martian will be on that list. The perilous adventures of Mark Watney are amazing – griping, funny, and weirdly educational. I got the audiobook with the intention of listening to it while I worked, but I was so enraptured by the story that I listened to the bulk of it for 7 hours straight. I highly recommend […]

Dude, you have balls of solid adamantium

May 5, 2015 by janniethestrange 3 Comments

It’s 2044 and the world is a mess. Wars, famine, unrest, depleted resources, you know the usual dystopian societal and geopolitical ills.  In this world, jobs and opportunities are scarce, resources even more so. It’s a hard, ugly life for the majority of people. The bright spot is OASIS, a virtual world that everyone, and I mean everyone, is a part of. Just to participate is free to all.  It’s a gigantic, global virtual world where you can be whatever you want to be, your avatar is everything. You […]

Separation made my heart grow colder

May 4, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

Two years ago I read, and loved, Wool, the first book in the Silo Trilogy. I bought the follow-up on Kindle. And then… I just never read it. Until a month ago, when I really took notice of it just sitting untouched in my Kindle library and thought, dang, I should really read this book! So with that in mind, understand that by sitting on it for so long, I lost all of my interest and I couldn’t get it back, and that’s possibly causing me to […]

One of the less interesting “episodes”, really

May 3, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

As this is book 26 in the In Death series (and probably somewhere in the mid-thirties in terms of Eve and Roarke stories if you count novellas as well), I shouldn’t have to tell you that it might be best if you start at the beginning, with Naked in Death. Although since these books play pretty much like a any murder of the week procedural on telly, and none of them tend to require you to jump in a the beginning, you’ll be able to […]
