Why did I wait so long to read this book?

September 14, 2015 by Mrs Smith Reads 3 Comments

I’m almost ashamed to admit that until this year, I had never read any Octavia Butler. When I went through my original SciFi reading phase in high school, she was never even mentioned amongst my nerd-kin friends, and now, though I’m late to the party, I know I have found one of the best writers, of any kind, of the modern age. Kindred is Butler’s best selling novel and is still required reading for many university and college writing and gender studies programs. The story […]

Fool Me Twice, Shame on Me

September 13, 2015 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

The Avengers by Julie Kaewert based on the screenplay written by Don Macpherson (1998, 227 pages) – I never learn. When the movie came out based on my favorite childhood characters, John Steed and Emma Peel, I ran to see it and came out confused and disappointed. What had happened to my heroes? Being the idiot I am, I rented the movie when it came out. The movie couldn’t really be as bad as I thought, right? It was worse than I remembered. Giant Grateful […]

One of those books you press on your friends

September 12, 2015 by llp 4 Comments

It seems like once a year I find a book that I can’t put down because I want to know how it ends, and the minute I finish, I try to find a friend who needs to immediately read this too. This is harder to do with people who read e-books, but you know what I mean. My 2015 edition of that book is Andy Weir’s The Martian. That this book is excellent will come as no surprise to virtually anyone, given it was published […]

This book made me happy, then not

September 10, 2015 by badkittyuno 3 Comments

For those of you who enjoy YA fiction, I would definitely recommend this one. There’s a slight science fiction element to it, but really, it’s a coming of age story and it’s fantastic. “Sometimes pain is so unmanageable that the idea of spending another day with it seems impossible. Other times pain acts as a compass to help you get through the messier tunnels of growing up. But the pain can only help you find happiness if you can remember it.” Aaron Soto has had a tough […]

A Book About a Jokey Robot

September 8, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 13 Comments

Well, I might as well get this over with. It’s intimidating panning a book everyone and their mother seems to love. Please don’t come at me with pitchforks. I will say this in The Martian’s defense, it has a stunning cover design and a really, really good premise. A clever botanist/engineer accidentally gets deserted on Mars and has to Macgyver his way to survival until someone can come back for him? Genius. If it sounds interesting to you at all, you should give it a […]

I’m Back!! back back back back back!!!

September 7, 2015 by denesteak 2 Comments

I should say that I have let way too much time lapse since I read both these books. Coming off my high on Wool, the first of a three-part series by Hugh Howey, I was very eager to get into the other two and bought them both pretty much immediately. My memory on some of the details are spotty, but I’ll try to keep this about my feelings regarding the two books. (Possible spoilers ahead for people who haven’t read Wool. In which case, you should totally read […]
