Taking this book to Cape Cod in mid May to read about the below freezing temperatures on Mars’ surface while on a freezing cold beach was probably not the best idea. Weir’s descriptive writing really does transport you to Mars and it is not human hospitable up there. Mark Watney, one of the first six people to step onto Mars, becomes the first resident of the planet. Watney, injured and presumed dead, gets left behind on the red planet and has to MacGyver his way […]
If you think you’ve been here before, you have.
First off, the rating. The Last Colony is a solid 4.5. I found the book delightful. Scalzi unpacked a little bit more of his universe, and ends the book with a punch, but not in a way that I felt suckered into continuing the series. It was just a final crescendo to a great adventure, and I was left wanting more. Which leads to my second point: Zoe’s Tale was fairly pointless. It’s a retelling of The Last Colony. Literally. It’s the exact same story, […]
Not Everything in the Teen Paranormal Romance Section is a Lost Cause
Have you started the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy? No? Then don’t read this, because it will be Spoiler City as this is the last book in the series. (Although I wouldn’t be surprised if this world of angels and chimera and Karou makes a reappearance at some point, considering how this one ended.) Karou is leading the chimera army, or what’s left of it, through deception. A sacrifice from the previous book let her with a puppet regime, with her at the strings. […]
Yellow Causes Anxiety
I’m just a bit behind in my reviews, meaning I read this book back in April and now it’s fall, so… Which is probably for the best, because this really isn’t a springtime book. This book needs to be read on a chilly fall day, while you’re under a quilt, with a pumpkin spice latte or mulled wine in your hand. The King in Yellow is a collection of short stories that pre-date Lovecraft and his elder god horror. (In fact, Lovecraft included the mythos began […]
Hey look, it’s a title with the word “girl” in it that’s actually about a girl, not a woman
I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to horror, but so many cannonballers loved The Girl With All the Gifts that I thought I should give it a try. And I’m so glad I did! What a beautifully inventive story that kept me turning pages. There were some tense parts, but nothing strong or gory enough to give me nightmares. However, this is maybe not the kind of book you want to read on your lunch hour unless you have a strong stomach. […]
Sci-Fi + Graphic Novel x Art = THIS
Saga by Brian K Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples burst onto my reading horizon when my sister-in-law brought the first three volumes over and told my wife and I we HAD to read it. Wanting to get more familiar with the graphic novel world I was immediately interested in reading them. Plus, it’s a sci-fi graphic novel and I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to sci-fi/fantasy stuff. I took the first volume and immediately got lost in the story. I finished […]
