Are aliens trying to kill us?

February 27, 2016 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So I finally finished this book last night. I actually quit halfway through, & this Cannonball is the only reason I picked it back up again to finish! I wanted to get credit for all of the reading I did ? Anyway, that’s not a good sign, right? I really liked this book at the beginning. It had an interesting premise, & the potential for an apocalypse, which is usually my jam.  It started out really cool.  There were a few different characters, an they […]

Where is my mind?

February 27, 2016 by maydays 3 Comments

Look at me, trying new things!  Based on a great review from ChainedVase https://everyday-offershub.com/2016/02/sci-fic-mystery-yes-please/, I went a bit outside of my rut and tried some sci-fi.  What a great read! In Scalzi’s very creative and fleshed-out world a widespread virus has resulted in millions of people being struck with Haden’s Syndrome, named for the first lady who was one of the early public victims.  Haden’s sufferers (called Hadens) are “locked in” to their bodies with full mental capacity and no voluntary nervous system.  Due to years of […]

If you’re nostalgic for the future…

February 27, 2016 by tillie Leave a Comment

I read this book in late nights, with tea and candles. I read it and I laugh and I cry and I get my hopes up and my dreams let down. You could say this book has it all, or at least you can say it has a lot. The Martian Chronicles are a series of interlinked stories as people from Earth arrive on Mars. It tells the story of humanity and its relation to Mars, to exploration, to ownership and to adventure. If you’re […]

A Nice and Accurate Review of the Apocalypse

February 26, 2016 by AkBeagle Leave a Comment

Quick what is your favorite book?  Did one pop into your mind immediately or did you need to add a few qualifying adjectives to narrow it down to just one title? Good Omens is usually my go-to answer when someone asks me what my favorite book is.  No book is my favorite, as in preferred above all else, but Good Omens is closest.  It holds a special place in my heart for being the tome that was my entry into a better class of fantasy/science […]

Where it all began

And the theme continues, as does the nightly reading of Star Wars movie novelizations with my kid. I’m so glad he’s into this stuff, rather than those awful Wimpy Kid books. Although he did just have to read How to Eat Fried Worms for school, which was terrible! These novelizations are based on the screenplays of the movies, and they often can fill in some of the back story and the subtext. I also think that they do a fair amount of retconning (more so […]

Still alive

February 23, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

The Girl with All the Gifts breathes life into its genre with a fresh angle on the pathology of an outbreak and an ending that I truly did not expect. The story opens at a noticeably unconventional school/dormitory, where the pupils are carefully monitored and restrained when they are not locked in their individual cells. Our primary protagonist, Melanie, is one such pupil, a bright girl of about ten who loves learning, particularly math and stories of Greek mythology. Her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau, encourages […]
