House Barca

Morning Star rounds out the Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown, wunderkind of science fiction publishing the past three years. There’s a movie deal, a bunch of us have read the books, and you may want to as well. Heck, how else are you to weigh in on the many comments on scootsa1000’s first review of the book? (I’m not going to include a summary of the book. I don’t like the official one, and I cannot think of a better one, so if you […]

Mad Wargarita

There is a danger to reading the book after watching the movie. Reading the book might cool your love for the movie, especially if the hero is white washed and played by an actor you don’t like. I had been meaning to read All You Need is Kill for a couple of years. I mostly loved the hideously named movie version, Edge of Tomorrow, but fully expected to like the book better. One major advantage of the book, besides being a book, would be the […]

Kickin it on Deathworld

March 14, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Last year on Pajiba and/or CBR, I asked for fun sci-fi recommendations. Harry Harrison’s Bill, the Galactic Hero series was recommended by more than a couple folks. A quick “Harry Harrison” search on my Kindle revealed this book, instead of Bill. This book was free, so I downloaded it and soaked it up. Deathworld, despite the name, is a fun and thoughtful work of science fiction from the man who brought us Soylent Green. It combines the things that I love most about sci-fi: entertainment, […]

Flashback

I’ve continued my exploration of the world of comic books with the next two volumes of the New 52 series of The Flash. I chose the Fastest Man Alive as my entry point because of my love for the CW television series and I feel like that series may itself be the reason I’m not capable of embracing the comics format. This is obviously just a personal bias, but compared to the well-rounded characters and fully-developed plotlines of the television show, the comics pale in […]

Test Tube Mutant Baby

March 11, 2016 by Melina 13 Comments

Remember when I told you that for some reason I was mildly enamored with this strange little book? She Has a Blow Hole! So then I decided that I would read the second book because I was majorly hooked! (Remind me never to smoke crack because clearly I have zero impulse control). Book two can be summed up in one word: UGGGH. Love, Lattes and Danger offered up very little love, ZERO lattes, and actually so much danger that it was annoying.  This book […]

Highly Entertaining Space Opera

March 11, 2016 by melanir 2 Comments

I was not expecting to like Leviathan Wakes as much as I did. I picked it up because I liked The Expanse on Scy-Fy and needed to know what happened next, but I picked it up thinking it’d be a slog through overly detailed hard sci-fi and I wasn’t really looking forward to the slog. But it is an extremely enjoyable read and I found myself fully immersed and engaged in the world that James S.A. Corey has created. If you watched The Expanse, then […]
